Load bearing walls

Been lurking here for a while and am addicted to the site. We are in the process of planning our kitchen remodel, started in February still going on and feel like I am getting nothing accomplished! We plan on knocking down a wall between the kitchen and dining room to give it more of an open space. We also want to move a load bearing wall back a couple of feet in order to have an island. Our KD said we have to have an engineer come in and check it out for a fee of $300- 500 to see if it can be done and how it should be done. Another kitchen store didn't recommend doing it because they say you are opening up a can of worms, you never know what you will find when you move a load bearing wall.

So, my question is, have any of you moved a load bearing wall, and if so , were there any problems?

Thanks for any advice.
