Confused about granite

We are first time home builders and we are totally confused about what countertop to choose. We are currently leaning towards lighter colored countertops. Our options are 'Santa Cicilia', 'Madura Gold' and 'New Venitian Gold'.

Our current favorite is 'Madura Gold'. If anyone has any advice on these granites, it will be much appreciated. Any pictures would also greatly help. The cabinets we have selected is the 'Birch Wood Amalfi' by Cardell.

marble.com is a very helpful site to decide about choosing granite, you can choose cabinet stain and then can match with the wide variety of granites. Hope it helps.

What I learned while granite shopping is that you have to go slab-by-slab. The Madura you are looking at may well be a completely different animal than the one someone else has.

Case in point: I used to loooooove Dakota Mahogany: it was dark reddish brown with some black specks and blue sparks. The last slab I saw was a pale pinkish gray.

Another example: New colonial dream at one yard was nearly white with charcoal graining, at the next it looked a lot like the Capella I ended up with-- swirled carmel and chocolate tones with large quartz inclusions.

At best, you can occasionally make generalizations along the lines of 'If it looks like Uba Tuba, it will probably be stain proof', but that's about as far as I'd go.

You can start with either the stone or the stain and choose the other to work with that. But buy the actual slab in front of you, not the hypothetical one due in from China at the end of the month.

Onionology is complicated. Will try to clarify a little: First a little background: "onion" is a huge catch-all imprecise category encompassing a highly diverse clan, allium cepa and other allium species as well. What we are talking about here are bi-annual bulbing onions, grown from seed. All varieties of bulbing onions ultimately derive from the so-called "spanish" onion. They fall into two rough categories, long-day and short-day, based on how much daylight there is around the solstices where the plant is growing. So bulbing onions are highly sensitive to photo period. The first most important thing to know is whether your latitude is "short" day or "long" day. As it happens, Kentucky is kind of in the middle, either might work though long day is probably more likely to do well. There are also a few hybrid varieties called "intermediate" day that might do best of all for you. Short-day varieties are sown in fall and come to full size in late spring. They require more than just low latitude, they also require a mild winter climate, about z7b or warmer, so some regions of KY might work and others not. Long-day are sown soon after the winter solstice and planted out in early spring and are full size in mid to late summer, depending. An exception is the walla-walla which is adapted to the PNW and I think there may be one or two others long-days that can be fall-sown in mild northern climes. So the infamous "sets" are small bulbs grown from seed and then planted to grow for the plant's second season. The plant really wants to bolt and grow seed rather than a bulb. Sets are a scam perpetrated by seed companies. They are mostly a waste of time and space. Buy plants grown from seed in texas next year, they come at just the right time for planting out and the results will be far better.

Confused about soil for figs in pots

Bart, Have used the AL's mix before but it did not work for me, no offence to AL. It might work for you. So I came up with my own mix which contains, Prime grow (Similar to Fertilome), Cow manure compost, Pine bark mulch, Pelletized limestone and Osmocote. Since potted up so many fig trees I do not measure how much to add from each components. But if I had to guess, I would say, 40% Prime grow, 30% Pine bark mulch and 30% Composte. Use a piece of tarp to make the mixing easy. Also mix the Osmocote with other components. And elevate the root ball about 2 inches above the soil line since the soil will settle down over time, top it off with couple of inches of pine bark mulch. During April-mid July every other week will water them with Mircole grew all purpose fertilizer mixed in water. And will stop the fertilization by 2nd week of July. More fertilization=less figs/fruits and more vegetative growth. I do fertilize my younger trees more often like twice a week. All of my trees have responded so well to this mix that some will grow over 5-6 feet tall each season and some produce 250+ figs. Have planted few fig trees in the ground and seems like they don't need any attention vs. growing them in the pots. Navid.

Confused about seams - what to expect re continuity of pattern

Scenario 2: You can ask if you can pay a premium to avoid a seam. I always thought it was just the transport to the home, but I learned that extra manpower was needed to move it from machine to machine at the shop. Case in point my big old honkin' island. They wanted to do a seam and swore it would be perfect since it was in the same slab. I insisted that I wanted no seam. I paid for it. Money well spent. As far as the other things, I would think a good fabricator will try to make the stone's pattern be continued, even if not perfect they should try to do their best. In my last kitchen, there was a piece in the boneyard from another job that was the perfect piece to add on to my counter run. It was not perfect, but you had to look to find that seam. Also, there is the part of the brain we need to train that says "this is a rock, therefore it is not perfect. Otherwise I would have chosen a man made product". But I agree, the swirls and stuff should continue in the same direction so as not to make it obvious where the seam is. I saw a piece in a fabricator's showroom that was horrible. Needless to say, that was pretty much the first nail in his coffin for not doing our current kitchen. Jacking up the price after the initial quote was the final nail.

Floorman here 40 years experience professional installer First. You have a bigger leak under floor if it buckling. Sound to me you would be better to have vinyl plank installed instead of wood. If you want a professional job it will cost you $10 plus for wood and labor no furniture. Labor alone is $5 in Missouri. The cheap hardwood is all going to be soft easy to scratch. Vinyl plank would be cheaper. Labor is $1.50 to $2.00 sq ft. Its glue down or it can be loose laid if you buy that type. If a peace gets scratched easier to replaced even for DIY but that peace will have to be glued. Vinyl plank looks like real wood now days. Water won’t hurt it as long as not a major leak. If your on concrete for wood or vinyl a moisture test should be taken first to see if there’s any hydrostatic pressure if there is it shouldn’t lay either one would have to fix problem first. With vinyl plank if it is glued you might need 1/4” underlayment on sub floor. But loose snap in vinyl plank you shouldn’t need underlayment. If your floor is wavy so will the vinyl plank look. Just my advice.

I love Madura gold too. Madura gold is a warmer color
where NVG or Santa Ceceilia has a cooler cast to the color
making it look nice with white cabinets or cooler shade
cabinets. It truly depends on the slab you are looking at.
All the granites you like would look beautiful
with the cabinet color you have chosen.
I found a few inspiration pics that maybe can help you
visualize. Now you will have to think of edge style. : )

Have you been to FKB yet? It is a great place to visit
on GW to see the finished kitchens. It helps to see
how the stone might look with your color cabinets.

And do a search of your color granite on the
search option of GW. That will give you a chance to
see how others have chosen and what they are doing.
