Under sink tip out trays??

I thought about purchasing the rev-a-shelf tip out tray that goes in the fake drawer under the sink. I wanted opinions on it.

Do you have it? love it?

I'm wondering if it will get moldy in there with a sponge sitting there. It's a great idea to hide the sponge but I don't want it to get all gross in there!

My kitchen cabinets are 27 years old...dang that old! :o
I use my tip outs for dishwashing detergent (gel packs), a plastic scraper and a (kitchen) toothbrush. I've never kept my sponges in it.

Make sure that you measure the room left for your sink first - the hardware of the tip out trays extends about an inch behind the cabinet opening. We had purchased a tip out tray, and installed it prior to installing the sink (for ease of installation,or so we thought.) We went a different way with a different sink, and the front to back depth of the sink precluded the use of a tip out tray (there is very little room between the sink basin and the front edge of the cabinet.) I sadly removed the tip out tray, but did a little problem solving and installed the plastic "sponge holder" that came with my tip out tray hardware (purchased too far in advance to get a refund) to the upper interior side of the sink cabinet. I use it for backup sponges, as well as the scrubby that i want to hide from others (I do not want my MIL using a scrubby on my glass stove top or on my stainless appliances.) It works great there. I also hid the chocolate chips that I don't want my kids ravaging before I bake the cookies :) Maybe I should start a new thread.

I love mine. They have the keyhole cutouts like brickeyee said so we can clean them. I really just use mine for plastic scrapers (washing dishes) and the other one is for a little sponge and cleaning solution for my range (they would get lost under the sink with the big stuff). I've had them for six years, and they have never been gross. I put the scrapers back dripping wet since the trays are plastic, and they've never had a problem drying out. I love them, and if they weren't there it would seem like a waste of space.

I bought SS holders that have 2 suction cups to attach them to the side of the sink at Target. I only keep a scrubby in mine b/c I use dishcloths instead of sponges. The scrubby in the cleanup sink is for dishes, the one in the prep sink is for lightly cleaning veggies like potatoes & carrots. Here's a pic of the prep sink w/a green scrubby: The scrubby dries quickly in this setup b/c it's in the open & exposed to clean, dry air. IMHO, there's less likely to be an explosion of bacteria growth b/c of this. (I still sanitize it though, just to be safe!)

I personally wouldn't want to use wire because everything I put in mine is wet. Wet things lead to drips down inside the rest of the cabinet. Mine tip-out trays are plastic. Yes they get dirty and grubby but I just pop them out and clean them now and then. Everything needs a little TLC and maintenance that is worth having, right? I had a wire basket thingy that held a pump hand soap bottle. I finally got rid of it because it was a lot of trouble just to keep it up because it 'looked good' by the sink. I still had to clean the gunk off it all the time. I would imagine the wire sink tray would be the same. My $.02.

I am not sure exactly what problem you are anticipating. However, what do you mean by "standard hinge." I used the Rev-a-shelf version. It is meant for either face-frame or frameless. Here is a link that might be useful: Rev-A-Shelf tip out tray.

Hestia, thanks for the advice on the size. I never thought of that. And my kids find devil dogs hidden inside of a coffee container...so maybe hiding things right under their noses would work!??!

Monica, My parents had the tip out in their kitchen when they redid it in the late 80's. It was top of the line back then...LOL!! My mom can't seem to remember if she had any problems with it though.

The line is made of plastic so you can take it out and wash it if it gets grungy. Not a big deal.

About 10 years ago I installed one in my 50-year-old built in place cabs and LOVE it. When I ordered my new cabinets I decided to hold off on a factory-installed tray for the same reason you mentioned, Hestia, concern for adequate space. I'm hoping in the end there will be and that I can still add one in myself, although the thought of digging into brand new cabs gives me fits!

Measure the depth from the front of the face frame to the sink bowl.

Tip out trays are available in a couple of sizes, with shallower ones if space is tight.

Rockler has both regular and shallow, and in 'cut to width' kits.

The sink stopper, sponges, and a stainless steel wool pad stay in ours.

If you barely snug up the mounting screws for the tray it can be slipped out without a screwdriver for cleaning.

I had tip out trays put into most of my sink cabinets and most of them are useless. The measurement was not done properly, and due to the size of the sinks and the depth of the counter, they had to be removed. It was a total waste of money.
The ones that I do have, I don't even use.

I use my sink tip-outs all the time. I don't use it for wet sponges (I leave those on my sink grid to dry), but I do store dry sponges, scrub brush, plastic scraper thingies, and the sink stopper in there. In the one in front of my prep sink, I also keep a couple of those teeny, cheap PC paring knives.

I love mine. I really do. Mine are big enough for
gloves, small dish bottle of palmolive and two sponges.
I put damp sponges in mine, (probably should not).

My DH had to rebuild the front of my entire sink cabinet
because I have such a huge monster single bowl sink. We
never thought that we would need more space for the sink.
So yes, plan very carefully and measure everything if you want the tip drawers.

Maybe because DH changed the tip drawers they are more
roomy. Not sure.

Mine are metal and I use them for sponges and magic erasers. Nothing gets moldy or smelly, there is plenty of air circulation under there. I wish I'd put them in my bathrooms.
