OK to have different hardware on trash pull-out?
Comments (19)Thank you SO much everyone for your posts!! All of you who posted kitchen pics, beautiful kitchens!! brickeyee, love that! What an easy and cute way to identify the garbage pull out. Show us a pic if you can! babs711, don't you just love getting ideas from GW? ;) I love this site! remodelfla, very good point! :) linelle, I've heard mixed reviews about pulls like that. Some have said that it does get in the way, especially when you have to get into the cabinet underneath. And that people don't like leaning up against the towel/bar. Especially if the towel is damp, then someone unknowingly leans up against it while using the sink, then gets dampness on their clothes. But then others have said it doesn't bother them at all! Do a search on it. I read a thread recently, but I can't remember if I did a search on it & found an old thread or if it was a recently posted thread....See MoreTrash cans on the kitchen floor vs. a cabinet pull out
Comments (15)sw_in_austin..I had forgotten about the dirty wall behind the trash can! We also had a stand alone trash can in our old kitchen. Like sw_in_austin the wall behind it would need constant cleaning b/c my DH & then DS & DD would "shoot" the trash into the can from half-way across the room (too much basketball in our family!). We used to take the trash out every day or two. Recyclables were kept in the garage in 3 separate containers...glass/plastic, newspapers, cardboard. Recyclables would either sit on the counter until someone took time to take them to the garage or they just go thrown out b/c it was easier. With the remodel, we put in an 18" double-bin trash pullout. The bins are 35qts each. The front bin is for trash, the back is for recyclables. I find that we recycle a lot more...which reduces the amount of trash. We now put glass/plastic & cardboard in the one bin (our county does mixed recycling). B/c of the increase in recycling, I find that we still only take the trash out every day or two. I wouldn't want the trash around any longer than that b/c it does start to smell. Recyclables, btw, also have to go out every couple of days. As to whether there's a mess on the door, no there isn't. My family no longer treats the trash can as a basket so trash is thrown out w/less force now! There have been a couple of times when something spilled, but we wiped it up right away. As to keeping the trash open while prepping/cooking...if you install a foot pedal you could open it hands-free! (We have the pedal but we haven't installed it yet.)...See Morehow to replace trash compactor with pull-out trash? need cabinet?
Comments (9)Sorry to bump this after so much time. Here's a picture of the trash compactor. This is the pull out trash/recycling system that I want. http://www.pullsdirect.com/rev-a-shelf-5349-2150dm-2-5349-series-double-50-quart-pull-out-waste-container-with-soft-close-slides/p1573591. It says that it fits in a 15 inch width cabinet. It took me this long to contact a few custom cabinet makers in my area. 2 of them have told me that to replace the trash compactor with the double pull out trash/recycling that I want, I would need to not only have a cabinet door/face, but also they'd need to create a cabinet box and a frame too. However, by doing this, the width of the side of the cabinet box would mean that they wouldn't be able to put in the pull-out that I want, which needs a width of 14.8 inches (the trash compactor is 15 inches), so I'd need to select a different one, which would have a much smaller bin size. The one I want has 2 50 quart bins, and I would have to go down to 2 27 quart bins, I think, to get it to fit, which is a big difference. I'm also talking to a third custom cabinet guy who said that there might be a way to be able to put in a "floor" to where the trash compactor was, so he could install the double pull out I want (which is bottom mounted, not side mounted) without any sides, and then put some type of frame at the top only, so something that the cabinet door could rest against while closed, but said he'd have to think about how to create it, and get back to me. I'm waiting to hear from him to see if he's thought of something that would work. In addition, the price estimates I've gotten so far were substantially higher than I was expecting. Alison, I'd love to know the details of how you and your dh did this. Did you add a whole cabinet box? If not, what did you mount your pullout to, and what does your door rest against? I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks! Here is a link that might be useful: rev-a-shelf double pull out...See MoreDoes anyone have pics of a pull out trash bin in an island?
Comments (32)Hi there, I have a larger family as well (five kids ages 17-21, all still living at home for the meantime) so I also have a busy kitchen. I have a trash compactor in my island instead of a pull out bin and that works great for us! It still gets emptied every 1-2 days, and I use regular trash bags (they’re the heavy duty Costco brand bags, found them to be the strongest) instead of special compactor bags, but without the compactor we were having to empty a full sized kitchen trash can twice a day. Since my compactor gets emptied so regularly, I don’t hesitate to put “stinky” trash in it... most people who use a compactor don’t do that because it might be weeks before it gets emptied... but I really like having a compactor. (I can’t crush it TOO many times though because stuff gets too heavy, and since I don’t shell out for the special compactor bags, the bags break if I try to cram too much into my compactor) I still usually get several crushes in per bag though. I also have a regular countertop microwave under the counter in the working side if my island. Like a previous poster mentioned, we don’t use our microwave constantly, and we tend to use the same couple of buttons each time. We don’t find it to be a problem getting stuff in our out, but it is a hassle if you wanted to actually see the digital display, the angle is bad for that. But we don’t need to see it if we are just pushing the same couple of buttons all the time. Now, the countertop microwaves are made to have plenty of air circulation on the sides... my hubby custom designed and diy built all of our cabinetry, and our microwave is just sitting on a shelf area under the island counter, but there is enough open space on each side of the microwave so it gets enough air circulation, we wouldn’t want it fitting snugly inside is my point. We did consider the drawer microwaves, but we just felt that we don’t use any microwave enough to warrant the cost of that. If I had enough room in my small walk in pantry I would’ve rather had the microwave in there, but that wasn’t an option for us, so under the counter has been a great alternative for us. Fwiw, my island trash compactor is directly behind me when I’m standing at my main kitchen sink where I do dishes, it hasn’t been much of a problem at all to turn around to throw stuff away. It was a good compromise to have it there at the island which is also my main prep space....See Morejeri
