Let's talk overhang

New kitchen will have a peninsula that separates the U-shaped small kitchen from the dining room. Trying to decide how much the overhang should be. I read this thread - http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg0712180218183.html

All good points. But my vision is to have this peninsula for the pint size folks in the family. I realize they'll get taller someday, but I definitely want them to be able to sit comfortably for play-doh, homework, rolling cookies, snacks...while I happily cook and watch them. Adults would sit there sometimes, but the kids would be in those seats often. Any advice on overhang that will compromise for adults and little kids? Thanks!
