Any pictures of 1x2 or 2x4 white subway tile?

I picked up some 3x6 white subway tiles from Lowes (the cheapies) to test out in my kitchen for a backsplash but for whatever reason the tiles look giant size in my kitchen. Maybe because my cabinets are short (I am guessing the standard height)??? Or because my kitchen is small???

Did anyone use a smaller tile in their kitchen?

Does anyone know where I can find cheap smaller tiles? I didn't see any other sizes in Lowes. If I do this project it has to be on a budget - we may upgrade the counters within the next few years so I don't want to spend a lot on a backsplash that may end up getting torn down - but I need to do something to hold me over in the meantime :)

We used 1 x 2 marble subways. They were about $13/sq ft from a loca tile store. The Home Depot near us had 1 x 2 travertine-looking subways that are really nice. They're sort of a creamy beige color.

Here's what our 1x2" white tile LOOKS like, but it wasn't cheap. It doesn't seem like such an unusual thing though, surely it can be found for not too much?

Although it looks intricate as hell, the herringbone is very simply, a brick joint pattern with every other tile turned on its side. Look at the pattern for a minute. You'll see that first the horizontal tiles look like steps, with each step being exactly a 1/2 tile advanced from the last. Then comes the vertical tiles doing the same thing. Then back to the horizontal tiles, and so on. Once you get going with it, it's really not as complicated as it looks. The only disadvantage is that your grout joint is predetermined by the tile size. If you lay two tiles longways side by side right next to a single tile cappling the ends of the two tiles, move the first two so their long edge is flush with either end of the capping tile. Whatever you have for a joint between the two tiles is what you're going to use for a grout joint throughout the floor. No ifs, ands, or buts.

I've got a couple of suggestions. One is to intersperse the Lowes subways with a narrow band of tiles, either small mosaic or a 1 x 6 strip. The 1 x 2's are usually considered mosaics, so they tend to be pricier than the standard white 3 x 6 subways. By going with a narrow strip in the field, you can spread out your cost. I hope I'm making sense.

I noticed my Lowes and Home Depot are carrying more mosaic options in the store. I don't know if they're doing this nationwide yet. I'm in TX.

Floor and Decor also have options that seem reasonably priced. If you happen to have one near you, check them out.
