Show me your kitchen floor!

So, we're buying a house that has linoleum flooring in the kitchen (and honey oak caniets and white appliances-- if you remember my oak cabinets thread!). At first we thought we might have to replace all the carpet in the house as well as the linoleum in the kitchen (one of my DS's has major allergies), but we had DS roll around on the carpet, and he didn't have any problems (yes, I took DS into the house and said, "Hey Buddy, roll around on the floor for Mama, and make sure you get your face in the carpet!). Anyhow, it looks like the carpet is going to stay, but I'm not going to be able to handle the linoleum for long. SO, what type of flooring do you have in your kitchen? We thought about Allure planks from HD (anybody know anything about them??), but that was back when we were thinking the living room flooring was going to have to go, too. We also thought about laminate, but I'm scared of having a major water event in the kitchen. Now I'm leaning towards tile. . . Anyhow, I think I need kitchen floor inspiration, so if you have a pic, please post it!! Here's a pic of the current kitchen (the furniture/lack of decoration is not mine b/c we haven't moved in yet). Thanks to my other "oak cabinets" thread, I think we've decided to stain the cabinets "java" and put in a light colored granite (like new venetian gold), as well as take down the wallpaper, etc.:

We have cork plank flooring. It was clicked into place by our contractor, not the flooring people. I chose this photo because it approximates the color of your cabinets with our island color (our cabinets all around the perimeter are white). So...we love it. It's got some give, it's super easy to keep clean, it's a renewable material, and it feels great underfoot. So far, we couldn't be happier!

It's by Montado. The color (misspelled) is called "Safron."

Here is our tile floor (Daltile Brancacci Windrift Beige #BC02 12x12" and 18x18" Pinwheel Pattern). It has been down since end of Feb and we are happy with the choices. In this pic you can see the cab color and the granite (golden). We thought it was a nice selection with the cab and granite colors.

Hi Bill, I have seen mention of this Mapei on other threads and did a google search and came up with a lot of foreign-language links. Who makes it? Or better yet, can you give me a link to a website? (Also, I sent you an email - did you get it? I noticed another tile installation disaster today. Our Master Bath floor has been covered for protection until today when part of it was exposed while the double vanity was installed. The large 16" square honed Calcutta Gold tiles are not centered on any of the walls, so there are really off grout lines at the center of the vanity. It is really obvious and when I think about it I literally want to cry :( . This is our forever house and everywhere I turn, a tile job is done badly. I could really use a good referal!)

Actually, I already have tile and I don't have a problem with it. I'm not crazy about what I have, so I'm thinking about replacing it with something more updated. mtnrdredux - For a long time I felt like I would get travertine when I got around to replacing my floors. When it came down to it, I decided I didn't want to deal with sealing it. chispa - I don't think I've ever seen that brand. Annie - I love the look of your floors. It reminds me of the smooth travertine floors as opposed to the rustic type. I've been looking for something with a calm pattern similar to dedtired's floors, but yet enough pattern and color to hide dirt. I found one I like, but I'm thinking it may look more busy than what I initially thought I wanted. The variation is a 4, which is the highest number. Looking at one tile, it's not overly busy, but who knows once the whole floor is laid. I really like the darker color, but I think the lighter color looks better with my countertop.

I love most of my tiled floors, but the kitchen one is giving me trouble. I would love it if they had installed it correctly. It came with our home and it's 37 years old. It's a random slate pattern. But they used paneling glue instead of thinset, so we're restoring it one section at a time and there's 1000sf of it. It's quite a chore, but we'll get it done eventually. We have 800sf of creek slate in our basement. It's beautiful and practically bulletproof. It's set in straight grid lines. But it was installed with the correct materials on a perfectly level floor. I have tile in my bathrooms and love it there too. Most tile professionals use thinset to glue the tiles down. He might feel insulted, but I always ask the brand names of the products the installers use and I research them online before they start to make sure it's good quality material. SEAL THE GROUT. Pay extra, if needed, or do it yourself. It's quite easy to seal. It's worth it to have the sealed grout clean up perfectly with minimal effort. Check your floor and make it perfectly level. I wouldn't put tile in an older home unless it was on concrete slabs. A level floor is necessary for tile. If it's not perfectly level, or could be prone to expanding/contracting/shifting, fix it or go with some other flooring. As far as offset, it's harder to lie tile in a perfect line. Do what you want and what you like. I'm finding that the contractors push what's easier for them. However, they work for you. If you like offset, or diagonal, do that. It's what you like. FWIW, hopscotch is my favorite pattern: One tile salesperson told me to measure my smallest aisle in the room and make sure I had at least 3 full tiles there. That was to help pick the size of tile that I should buy for the room. When you buy your tile, ask them how they would lay it and ask them to suggest grout colors. If you need to buy it from a big box store, still, go to a tile store, find something similar and ask for ideas on grout colors and an install. But if you are able to get your tile form a tile store, I would recommend that. They really know about design, materials and anything related to tile. You won't get that from Home Depot and an installer. Good luck!

Donnakay2009-- I hadn't even thought about cork flooring. How durable/waterproof is it? And how does the pricing compare to tile?
steelerfan2010-- I really like the pinwheel pattern on the tile floor. How much more expensive was it to have it installed in a pinwheel pattern vs. just a regular install?

We have floating cork floors (color is antique copper swirl), and I LOVE them. They are warm to the touch and soft underfoot.

Our neighbor owns a restaurant with the same floors, and they've held up well for the 8 years he's been in business. I figure in a residential environment, my floors will get less wear and tear. I am not concerned about water getting on my floors, since they put corks in wine bottles and none of my wine seems to leak or anything. :)

We installed porcelain tile directly over the old sheet linoleum which was still solidly glued down & not peeling up anywhere. It has been 2 years and so far it's been great!

We have Crossville Stong series in beige-Italian porcelain 12 x 12 tiles. We love it!

I was determined to have white, textured tile, and have it not be made to look like stone. I finally found it! (Stonepeak Fashion White Cotton.) LOVE it! Here's a picture in process and one (cluttery) finished. The random set was designed by my tilesetter according to my instructions.

I know you said you're afraid of laminate...But I'm not...We have it throughout our home for the last 6 yrs..still looks new despite prolonged liquid accidents! We extended it into the kitchen. Excuse the dust as this is during construction:)
Pergo Select is the brand, which I think matters when going with a laminate. My neighbor just had some installed in her home after seeing mine, and hers is even more beautiful.

hi Katie - Re: the cost of install on the pinwheel pattern... in my limited experience I would say - depends. We interviewed 2 KD for the project. One said a pattern would increase the cost the other said a pattern didn't matter - once the installer gets the patern down it is the same as a grid. We hired the KD that said no extra charge (not for that particular reason). There are tile pros that visit this board so if you started a new thread to ask their opinion they may respond.
