Anybody have two different countertops in their kitchen?

Does anybody here have two absolutely different countertops in their kitchen? Like granite + stainless steel or granite + butches block , etc... ? I'd love to see pictures.

My kitchen is all granite right now, but there is an empty area that I plan to put a totally different type of countertop in at a slightly lower height, kind of like a "baking/ laptop desk" area. I've been thinking either butcher block or stainless or recycled glass sort of a thing.

I think it looks fantastic. It's done on islands all the time - so why not your baking/laptop station? I've seen it done on TV shows too , and I just love it. I wish I had a spot for it - I'd do it myself. If I have any pictures I'll post them!

Yes! Lots of us do. I have three. And plenty have varying counter heights too.

Have you looked in the Finished Kitchens Blog? That's where records of our kitchens go. (Not mine--it's not quite done yet.)

I have 3, actually. I don't recommend it, but in the busyness of my kitchen it's not too bad, and it was necessary for function.

I've got to get a better picture than this cluttered one, but this is the most cleared it's been during the not finished yet.

The far counter is handmade tile, the island surface is a soapstone because getting custom tile to fit around the sink would have been nightmarish (though theoretically possible), and the table portion is sunflower seed husk board because it had to be lightweight. The table folds down. You can see just a bit of the bracket underneath on the right hand side. The perimeter is 36.5" high, the island is 38" and the table is 30". The table is strong enough for rolling dough, but I decided I'd just wear tall clogs and roll on top of the island. I think. Haven't been able to bake yet.

Hehehe!! When I saw this thread by me, I couldn't figure out when I posted it - I didn't remember posting this one at all! But after reading it, I do remember that spicebush swallowtail dancing all over the palamedes. If they mated, the resulting hybrids would have to be called Sherry swallowtails! :) I never did see 'em mate, though, so I guess they weren't that confused! That reminds me, early this spring when the male hummingbirds had gotten here, but the females hadn't yet arrived, I heard a male buzzing the "shuttle" which is a mating ritual/dance they do for females. I thought surely a female was here, then I heard the same thing a little later, and he was courting a chickadee! I guess he just courted the littlest bird he could find! MissSherry

Backsplash ideas for two different countertop colors

OK guys... picture this. My neighbor is a KD and he actually suggested that we go with the slate backsplash. I picked up a sample of it. It doesn't look as busy as you'd think: I almost feel like it helps create some depth in the kitchen by creating a backdrop for the island... if that makes any sense?! I feel like a monochrome backsplash would cause the island to stick out completely, with no anchor whatsoever? Anyway, he also suggested that we run one strong metal liner through the slate... Something like this: I am really liking the idea of the strong silver accent cutting through the muted colors of the slate. I think it's kind of different! Only problem is... can you believe each one of those silver liners costs freaking $19. Yes, that is apiece. :-p The company is called Metal Border Italia

I would go one or the other. In my old house we did mostly formica and then a corian for coffee area and it didn't really make it any better for the price. Having 2 different type of surfaces may just clash espeically if you do a granite like formica. Have you shopped around for granite? its a lot cheaper than it used to be.

Granite is not polished at the fabricators. It's polished at the production facility where it's sliced from giant blocks like bread being sliced. It's why you can go to a granite yard and find bookmarked slabs. When it's sliced, the two adjacent faces are either smooth or rough. That facilitates transport so that it doesn't have a rough side against smooth. Also, sealing granite has zero to do with it's texture. It penetrates the stone's pores, nothing more. It's not a topical coating like you put on wood with polyurethane. There is no physical change in the texture of the stone between one with sealer and without. If there is, it's typically caused by too much sealer being applied and it would need to be stripped to start over.

We have 5; butcher block (actually repurposed bowling alley), Vermont slate, stainless steel, cut on butcherblock and quartz, we really like to mix things up, plus, I love all those surfaces, and couldn't choose just one.

I've got two, probably three when we get around to adding our island. We have stainless steel on our sink run and quartzite bianca on the cooking run plus peninsula. I really like mixing up the counter materials.

Haven't posted pics yet (not quite done, will it EVER be?) but we just installed honed Absolute Black granite on perimeter counters, and cherry butcher block on our island. I love the contrast! I think wood and granite/soapstone complement each other well in almost any combination. After all, trees and rocks go together well in nature! ;)

We have Bianco Antico granite and a re-do of our wonderful 40-year old hard-rock maple, dyed deep brown and lacquered, for two side areas. The BA is on the heavy-wear areas, and the butcher-block is for side areas, mostly for show. I like the way it looks. I really wanted marble, but the price of the stone wasn't in our budget. We're really happy with the results.

I'm in the research/planning stage but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to put in about 36" of butcher block on either side of my cooktop. The rest of the counterspace will be either granite or quartz. Lots of people go with a different granite or other surface on their island. I don't think I'll have an island (unless we decide to open up the kitchen to the dining room), but I really want a practical working surface near the cooktop.
