Opinions on granite countertop (please)
Comments (4)I, too, love Carrara marble, but could not imagine it in the kitchen. I was going to put it in my bathroom. The sample I had sat in there for only two weeks and I could see wear on it. I assume you already know this, but its worth pointing out. I have a friend who put in all honed marble in her kitchen. It was gorgeous until they lived with it for a while. Now she's just sick over all the scratches etc., but she paid so much the first time she cannot replace it anytime soon. I'm granite shopping for the kitchen too & it seems to me I had found a quartz that resembled carrara. I can try to find it again if you like?...See Moregranite overlay
Comments (6)There have been several posts on this over at the Kitchens forum. As I recall, the selection was limited, and the final end cost was really not much less than a regular slab, sometimes even more expensive. Granite slab prices have REALLY come down in recent years. Where we are, you can get pre-fab slab granite installed for as little $25/SF. Prices of $45-55/SF are very common for full-custom. Comments (16)I like partial overlay. In my last home, I had partial overlay in my kitchen, living room built-ins and office cabinetry. They were all custom cabinets. The house was a tiny (880 s.f.) 1960's box near the beach. There wasn't much dictating style for the neighborhood (we had a flat roof and our neighbors were in an 1800's Victorian), so we just did what we wanted. In my current home, we have inset cabinets in the kitchen, which I love, but I think if we didn't have a budget for the inset I would have gone with partial overlay again. I just like the look. I think the above examples are beautiful. Here are a few examples from my previous home of partial overlay (sorry, only one kitchen example). This was our living room. We installed the fireplace and surrounding cabinets which were partial overlay. This was a Tuff Shed that we turned into a detached office. Our lot size was only 2200 s.f. so space was tight! The previous owners had installed the shed, but when I was pregnant with our daughter, we turned the shed into our office with custom partial overlay cabinets. Here is the partial overlay kitchen cabinetry (and laundry room beyond) that was installed by the previous owner....See MoreLooking for Opinions on granite countertops
Comments (12)The last thing you want to do is introduce yellow into your kitchen. Sorry, hubby! Those granites are too brassy for 2014! I would suggest Giallo Ornamental Light--not Giallo Ornamental, which is more gold. The crystals are creamy instead of gold, but it does have a little soft gold to work with the cabinets. The garnet inclusions are a deep maroon brown, which will pull the browns from the tile. You will also see some taupe and blue-green-gray. However, it will be a little busy, but that can't be helped if you want granite. I have GOL in my guest bath with dark cherry cabinets, but I held a pine shelf under it to simulate your yellow cabinets, and it looked pretty good. Another granite to try is Colonial Cream or Colonial Gold, but it might be too carmel for your backsplash. If a granite doesn't work, I'd ask myself if it's worthwhile to make such an important, expensive, and long-term decision based on a couple of hundreds of dollars of old tile. You could use a quiet creamy quartz or a quartzite like OOTM posted, but also ask yourself if the age and condition of the cabinets warrants that type of expense. Here's a pic of a Giallo Ornamental Light counter that looks a lot like mine....See Morecovingtoncat
