Bathroom remodel in a hurry - what would you do?
Comments (7)Does it HAVE to be a quick remodel? I ask because you say "master bathroom" which suggests maybe there is another bathroom in the house. If that's the case, then I'd really look at your absolute needs and see if you can take a little more time to make certain you're happy with the end result. Personally, I'd take a little time (maybe a day or even two) and decide what general look I want. Use pictures online from sites like Houzz or this site and find the aspects you like. Come up with a solid layout (maybe it's essentially what you have but swapping a shower for the tub) as everything goes from there. And decide on a general look (tile colors, accents or no?, painted or stained vanity, counter material, light fixture type/placement, etc) and go from there. I'd then take another day or two and run to actual tile stores (not big box stores) and bring home all the samples I liked. In case you're wondering, I have a giant stack of samples in my basement from doing this myself. Tile is one of the first things to go in, so you want to have that picked out as soon as possible (especially if it has to be ordered). Then while mulling over the tiles (put them in the room if possible or at least in a nearby room) and picking out favorites, I'd hit up plumbing showrooms and do some research on plumbing fixtures. Pick out your shower fixtures so that they can rough in the plumbing in the shower. You can take a little more time with toilet and sinks and faucets, especially if you generally know what you want. They can be installed after the tile. I'd probably then hit up granite yards (or whatever counter material you want) and bring home a lot of samples again. I'd put those with my favorite sample tiles and mull over until I found the ones that worked best for me. I might hit big box stores for vanity options or maybe check out the cabinet maker that did your kitchen (assuming you replaced cabinetry). There is absolutely no reason you have to rush on the non-fixed items like mirrors, towel holders, etc. A bathroom can be perfectly usable before you have these picked out and installed....See MoreTrying to figure out what color to stain my red oak hardwood floors. Comments (6)A light or no stain on red oak will give you pink floors, so best to go with a medium brown. A medium tone is also classic - as styles swing back and forth from light to dark I think it's best to be in the middle. Who wants to refinish their floors every 5-10 years? This way you won't have to do it again until they need it instead of when fashions change. Just don't go too cool on the brown - they shouldn't look gray. Gray floors are definitely out on the coasts - if this hasn't happened yet where you live it is on its way....See Morereplacing floors with red oak hardwood - how do I pick a stain color
Comments (3)Get white oak, sand it....and put clear coat on it. The most forgiving to daily use, ever. Or stick to a medium brown tone, not gray, not red......and test ON YOUR SITE,.....select and proceed. : ) The difference in price will come back to you in saved agonizing over pink and red tones - hard to eliminate in any red oak. Failing that? Go to a very good flooring store, pick a quality engineered 3/4 inch thick white oak pre finished hardwood, ( from multiples of finishes ) and you'll know exactly what you're getting before you even rip....See MoreWhat stain colors can you use with red oak floors
Comments (9)Either Special Walnut or Provincial will make it easy to blend new and old oak. Here's a photo of Special Walnut, at the transition from 90+ year old oak (not sure if it's red or white) on the top (in a dining room) to brand new white oak on the bottom (in a new kitchen): Could you tell the difference if I didn't tell you which was which? As for color, I personally think that avoiding too light or too dark eliminates a lot of the problems with wood floors. Too dark shows all the lint and too light all the dirt. Also a well-finished and sealed floor can hold up just fine with pets. Also medium toned brown works with any style of home or furnishings....See Morekelleg69
