Terra Cotta Tiles or Something Like It?

Hi - I've fallen in love with antique Hexagon Terra Cotta tiles....I would love to have them in my kitchen. Needless to say - they are very much out my price range. I'm wondering if there is a"knock-off" suggestion or similar type of feel for the kitchen?

My kitchen is a glazed white cabinet with brown glazed edges. Jet mist countertop. White subway backslpash. We're using a wood top/distressed white leg kitchen table as an island.

The tiles will be for half of the kitchen - there will also be a hardwood floor (which runs throughout the rest of the house as well).

Hello Basilbee - -I am having the real thing installed in my remodel a for a very reasonable price - installed for less then $6.00 per sq. ft. Of course that is the basic 12" square - -I think special shapes are more.

Thank you! Thats a great suggestion...I saw some others on Ann Sacks as well. The subway for the backsplash is just a place holder idea. Any suggestions for a backsplash if there's a terra cotta floor in the kitchen?

I would put the tiles in some sand and then pour the concrete over them. That way they would stay in place. I have seen some cool pavers made with terra cotta pieces along with stones, glass and shells. A mold was created with wood (screwed together so it could be taken apart easily) and the pieces were put in the bottom and the concrete poured on top of them. In one magazine, they had a "mat" that looked like a patchwork quilt with pavers decorated like that. Below is a picture of what I'm kind of talking about. This was taken at Grandview, the farmer who lived there created all kinds of mosaic sculptures and even mosaiced the outside walls of the house. This is a "mat" in front of the front door. It looks like it is made with stones and glass cut you could do something similar with some of your broken up tiles.

If you look at the Color Gallery on the Benjamin Moore Website, and search Chelsea Gray, and look under the "More Shades" link at the bottom, the following lighter colors are shown: 1611 Gray Tint 1472 Silver Chain 1474 Cape May Cobblestone 1475 Graystone 1471 Shoreline 1473 Gray Huskie round out the upper end of the strip. It's likely that Chelsea Gray is essentially one of the colors on the dark end of the strip with a different name. Try one of these. You could also go white and do White Dove, like you did in the other room.

Seneca makes a line called Select Handmold -- they are glazed quarry tiles with a matte gloss and come in subtle colors. Very nice rustic antique looking tile. Seneca also makes other quarry tiles. All of their lines have hexagon shapes in a couple of sizes.

Have you looked at Saltillo tile? It is very inexpensive, available in hexagon, and can be stained to look antique.

I have Saltillo floors and they are a little more work than ceramic or porcelain. They have a natural warmth that cannot be duplicated with ceramic so it's worth it.

Salsibe, try googling Fort Worth Brick and Tile. There are many saltillo places in Texas, and they are very reasonably priced. I want to say 2-3$ a foot. They come glazed, so they are maintenance free, or unglazed, and also in a rustic which in my opinion, is gorgeous. I have a sample of the rustic, I'll try to take a picture and post it.

I'm going through exactly what you are...I want terracotta, and that is basically what saltillo is, it's baked earth, clay.

My tiles are going to be in half the kitchen as well, along with hardwood.

I just looked on their website, 8x8 hexagon is 1.69 a piece, and 12x12 is 2.49. That is sealed. Unsealed is cheaper. I don't know how to post links here, but there website is
