How many different counter surfaces overkill?

We're just getting started building our house. Have the architect's design and have chosen our builder. He bid on all granite in the kitchen, with one end of the island a 3'x3' section of butcher block, open underneath so I can pull out a stool and sit to do some prep work. My question, though, is how much of a mixture of surfaces is TOO much? I frankly am not a huge fan of long expanses of granite, and we have lots of countertop area. I can see the granite around the prep and clean-up sink and in my baking center area. But I have two small counters either side of my cooktop, chiefly for setting down hot pans from the cooktop and the ovens on the other side of one counter. What about using ceramic tile there, just as a break from all that granite and for the economy of the material? I will have a rather simple--perhaps just subway tile--backsplash. Any feedback from TKOs will be appreciated!
