Well....

I am used to using 2CM Pakistani White Onyx that I get from
Arizona Tile here in Phoenix AZ... OK, OK - I know that this may
not very easy for you to source waaaay up there in God's Country... HA!!!!

Depending on what you are doing, you may
ba able to pull it off..... I have done single slab shipments
in the past - a bit pricey, but worth it!!!!

I like the 2CM because it
transmitts the light much better than the thicker 3CM material when I am using it for a backlit project......

Alec is a good friend that is also a Fabricator and is
Way Cool!!! (pardon the pun)
Knowing Alec, I would think that
an Onyx project would be something right up his alley, as
Alec does alot of cool decorative stuff -
besides regular countertop fabrication.

In my experience, many of the White Onyx "species" on the market will have
some kind of other colors of veining in them
that is -
unless they are sold as "select" grade - where the veining
is not as pronounced and in many cases white on white....

Kevin you rock! I'm actually dealing with a different supplier (because fairbanks is about five hours away) but I'm going to give him a call anyhoo. We expect to be installing during the summer, so it's do'able to deal with Fairbanks if I have to...since I'm set on this silly countertop LOL

I was quoted $7,500 (give or tak a few bucks) for the stone here (although as I noted, it won't work because it's not white enough) I'm probably buying the whole slab, although with these folks, they might not make me do so...I didn't think to ask (lol how's that for being desperate for stone!)

I'm dealing with a place called Hard Rock Designs in Wasilla Ak. There are really only three very very very reputable dealers in the anchorage bowl and this is pretty much the top (they tend to supply everyone else). They're wonderful folks, but I'm challenging them heh heh

They rescued me after my disasterous experience with a smaller fabricator and saved me thousands by working hard with me to get exactly the right stone for our kitchen. So they might come through on this as well...but I'll check both dealers, because i'm really very sold on onyx in the master!

I-chic, it sounds like you have it covered but my granite yard carries a lot of onyx in amazing colors -- apparently the yard is frequented by designers supplying for celebrities & high end people (plenty of those in SoCal) -- I saw lime green and bubble gum pink onyxes, creamy white onyx (no orange) with nautilus shells embedded, etc -- they'll email pix too. Post something if things don't work out up there. HTH.

The stuff shown on the bookmatch pages is mindboggling in person -- maybe 30' x 15' -- webpages just don't do it justice.

Uh, not wanting to put your remodel into its 5th year and 5x budget, but that geode onyx is better looking in person. The two that really impressed me -- I saved pix on my celphone -- were translucent with nautilus shells embedded. One was brown & green with a lot of fossils -- you had to look to pick out the nautilus shells, sort of like a kid's find-the-hidden-animals, and the other was translucent creamy white with brown shells. Very high end, I'm sure. Check it out if you can :)

Kevin...DH and I often talk about opening a wine tasting room...but we worry we'd drink all the product. I think if I had a stone yard, I'd lock the gate and just roll around naked on the stones all the time (mind you that wouldn't be so much fun in the winter here...oh wait, i could roll on the bordeaux/radioactive stuff in January)

Looks gorgeous! LOL on the rolling around on the radio active stuff! Anyone have winning lotto numbers so I can redo my bathroom or have one wall with nothing but an onyx slab? I have always thought that it would just make a beautiful "picture" on a wall. Nature's artwork at her best.

Was away for awhile. Now catching up. Congrats to Igloo! (Not sure how she found the time to get into her state, but that's totally OT, huh?) Now, question that is on topic: How does one go about the underlighting for onyx or other translucent counter tops? What kind of lighting, waterproofing, etc. does one use?

Had I planned this KD I'd have added power under the sink and put some rope lights in, but since I didn't, we'll remove the dust lid from our cabinets and I'll just pop in a couple of battery operated pucks in the sink cabs which is enough to give you a nice glow for the counters. it dosen't take much light to make them gorgeous.

in my powder room i'm doing something similar...we'll tuck a little puck behind the vessel sink by the wall where you can't really see it without making an effort to search and use that to backlight our onyx sink. we have already experimented with both ideas and they work great.

Iam not sure if you were asking about waterproofing...or sealing? The onyx is sealed like other stone, and on the sink, you can actually wax those as well to make care easier. for waterproofing on lights...well the battery pucks are no where near water, since they're under the counters...heat is more of an issue with the lighting since you're sandwiching it up near the wood and the counters. it takes very very little though....our stone yard has an onyx bathroom floor lit with just one 40 watt bulb in the center of the floor.
