A few cautions from my recent experience.

I had a sample of WZ Gramercy Park from a local tile store that has since closed its doors. The sample was probably at least 5 years old. I ordered the tile from Mediterranean Tile on April 9th. Here's what happened -- first, I waited nearly two months. (WZ is slow but the field tile was available. They held the order for the few pieces of bullnose). Second, the tile is made by some place in Mexico --now I know WZ uses many suppliers and doesn't make anything themselves. But there is not one word on any of the boxes that says it is Walker Zanger. Third, the tile is very slightly different in color, and the crackles are not as pronounced as my admittedly old sample.

I still like them. But a little disappointed that they're not exactly like the sample and they're not exactly what I expected.

So, if you're ordering tile online be sure to get a sample of the current batch. And check lead times before you order for all field and trim pieces.

I ordered from mosaicsource.com and from glasstilestore. Both transactions went off without a hitch.

I ended up ordering Winchester tiles from Tile Source and was very happy. Winchester has a phenomenal color selection and Anna at Tile source was great about getting me samples. The tiles come from England but they keep stock here in the US so you can get them fairly quickly if need be. The only drawback is that they ship on a regular freight carrier, same as what delivers to my local tile store so there is a healthy up front freight charge. I orderered encaustic tile from them at the same time and combined my shipping charges which helped a lot. At least when it ships on a regular truck like that it is very well packed and there was no problem with breakage.

We found a tile there that we considered using for our fireplace surround. I ordered a single sheet to see if we would like it before placing the full order. They have three ordering options sample, single sheet and box.

Our order arrived and one of the 2x4 tiles was broken. About a third of it was missing - nowhere to be found in the box. They had obviously shipped it that way - it wasn't damaged in shipment. We decided that we didn't want to do business with them.

I contacted them and said that I wanted to return it for a refund, but that I wouldn't pay for shipping as I didn't order a damaged tile. They requested a photograph which I emailed to them.

Then they said that single sheets were considered samples and were not returnable. It was in fact a sample, but I didn't want to return it because I didn't like it, we just felt that they anyone who would ship an obviously damaged product couldn't be trusted with our full order.

After some back and forth they offered to replace the damaged tile but would not refund our purchase. The emails were sarcastic and full of annoying ALL CAPS phrases.

The replacement came yesterday and it was a single 2x4 tile, not the whole sheet.

There's no way I would order from these people and wanted to warn the garden web community about them.

Some here have used them successfully. Their retail store is in my town, and I have been there. They have good prices and an enormous selection.

Look at Mission Stone and Tile. The problem with online stores is the cost of shipping can really push up your overall cost.

But I think Mission Stone and tile will give free shipping for orders over a certain amount. ($350?)

They have a very nice website to check out with lots of eye candy. You can ask for samples and they will happily send them. (look at all the tabs on across the top, the blog has lots of ideas too)

I would suggest calling and asking for Mary Elizabeth, the president, and tell her you were told to get in touch by me. I won my backsplash from them in a contest and really have loved working with them. They actually love the "design" side of things, so they can even help with suggestions.

And my laundry room floor is from them too (another contest).

I think that the code THERAPY will get you a 10% discount, it was from the ad that ran on Apartment Therapy in May.

I did alot of research before buying from online flooring stores. Although I was confused, it wasn't until I walked into my local Lowes store and saw beautiful tile offered by ArtWalk Tile. I told the salesman I was building a new house and was looking for a unique tile. He suggested I contact ArtWalk Tile. He said they were the largest internet distributor in the USA. If ArtWalk Tile sells to Lowes they have to be credible. That was 1 year ago. Since then I have ordered 3 times and have referred everyone in my development. Shipping really wasn't that much considering...it actually only added .35 cents per square foot.
