sink with built-in drainboards

We just bought a house and are trying to do a very fast and unplanned kitchen remodel since we are still in a rental for another month. One big question I have is that our friend is making us a maple face-grain countertop for the entire length. We will have white cabinets. We are having trouble deciding about the sink - I keep thinking that since we are a fast-moving family with small kids that the sink is the place where water problems will likely occur. I have seen a few photos of sinks with integrated drainboards installed but can't seem to find them to purchase. Are these custom? Does anyone have a feeling if this is a good idea? Any other suggestions for what to do around the sink? I might consider an undermount except that then the faucet, etc. needs to be drilled in and again seems like a bad spot.
