Organic - unless you live in a newly built house where the builders have removed the topsoil you already have 'topsoil' in your garden. It may be clay soil but it is probably absolutely fine as the basis for starting to garden. I have very heavy clay but with compost and muck added it grows good crops. There are not many places in Southern England that do not have soil which will make a reasonable garden. If you really want to be planting stuff out in a couple of weeks you are looking at a large outlay in bagged compost and loam to fill raised beds that fast. I really do believe the cheaper, and in the long run, better option would be to dig the ground you have. It's more work but will give you a good garden. However, if you are set on filling up raised beds about 2/3 potting compost to 1/3 garden soil or John Innes would be about right. Plus you will need some sort of retaining edging unless you are just going to mound the earth up. This is going to be very expensive.

Michelle - I feel your pain. I think I lost a total of 15 registered cultivars, mostly newer cultivars. I've been through it several times before, so it doesn't surprise me. I'm sure many of our member have had losses this year. Those of you who've been around for a few years will remember about three years ago when some of our Southern members lost hundreds grown in pots. It's much harder on those new to daylilies, who don't have that many. What bothers me more than the registered ones, is the 150 seedlings I lost. I had put a lot of planning, time and effort into those and it will take years to replace them. But people, this pity party for me must stop. REALLY! Bahia is right. Most of them are going to be terribly difficult on the East Coast. I've tried and the seedlings, at least, tend to die on the first hot and humid day. I think this is what would happen, eventually, with most of the protea plants if one could actually obtain them. (and yes, the conservatory at Longwood Gardens that grows rare subtropical plants from mild climates is air conditioned! A luxury I daresay most of us could not afford. Since he knew the name of the designer, can we assume he was being cheeky by calling it the "big estate garden outside Philadelphia"? Haha...good one. The next time I need to mention Kew I'm going to call it "the big botanical garden in SW London.") An option is to try to find Protea species that SHOULD be more tolerant. Unfortunately, they are quite rare, as they would not grow easily in California, and Florida is just too hot for them. The distribution map of Protea caffra seems to place it in parts of Eastern South Africa and Mozambique, Zimbabwe, etc. that might get somewhat hot and humid. Protea simplex is a dwarf relative of it. The problem with the montane Drakensberg species is, sure, they like summer rain (unlike the proteas grown in California, which are winter growers), but in fact that climate often has cool dry air that is briefly punctuated by storms, rather than our constant steam bath. Another option is to do what he said, just root some of the leftovers from your flower biz., and try them in containers. Because of some random spin of the genetic dice, there's no telling whether CERTAIN Cape species (the kind grown in Cali.) might be able to in fact, tolerate our weather. (of course, talking about summer weather here, they are going to need to be kept in a greenhouse in the winter) Keep in mind this happens all the time, just to less of a degree. The Himalayan Rhododendrons grown, say, on the West Coast of England, aren't really happy with the winters being so wet compared to their homeland, but they can manage it. The plants that absolutely won't take a climate different from their local one are the exception, not the rule. Why don't western Blue Brodiaea bulbs rot in our wet eastern summers? I don't know, but they don't. It's just that you are asking a lot for these proteas to survive quite a different regime from their native environment, and proteas being the strange group that they are, have adaptability issues, period. Like not being able to handle phosphorus fertilizer.

My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
