Kitchen Backsplash

My wife wants me to put our 5" tile on a diagonal, so my question is this; I plan to cut several with my wet saw, exactly in half, and am wondering if the width of the saw blade will make each piece just a little too short, or will this be taken care of by the grout? These blades look to be about 1/8", so that means if I can cut the tile exactly on the diagonal, I should be taking 1/16" off each piece. Will this just blend in, in the grand scheme of things. Should I cut just 1/8" off the diagonal, and just hope I can use the short piece somewhere else? Or, as a final option, should I just nip off 1/16" of an inch from every full piece so the bottom row all starts out with the same disadvantage?

I was talking about putting our new backsplash on the diagonal, and wanted to run something by this forum, and maybe learn of a different, i.e. better way to do it. Since they are going to be on the diag, and I want all lines to be just perfect, and points all true north and south, I was thinking of cutting a piece of plywood about 16" tall at a 45 degree angle. I'm thinking it would help me get the first few in at the proper angle, and with my spacers it would keep everything all running in straight lines. If not this way, how do the pros do it, or are they just good at it from doing it all these years they can just "eyeball" it.

That IS a little awkward. I'd look for very small molding trim pieces, paintable to match cabinets and sill, to go on that edge from the sill around the corner into the cabinet. Something like a L in profile that could cover the edges. If you have the chance to get it redone, have it end a few inches away from the window (like as far as the stool comes out to the side) and use a Schluter type of edging. At least caulk the edges with paintable caulk and ignore it. The big picture looks good! It'll only bother you when you're at the sink. :)

Agreeing with others, but want to add. Not only is backsplash choice last, but it also should not be chosen until after everything else is installed. Everything looks entirely different after it is installed, and if you choose your backsplash before that, you will make a mistake. Don't worry about not having your GC still available for the backsplash after everything else is installed. You will actually get a better backsplash installation if you hire a tile installer yourself. Remove the backsplash from the GC's scope of work, and hire someone yourself later to install it.

I have a small kitchen too and I am looking for a 3" by 12" tile, but I am open to whatever works best. I like the brick-like proportions of longer tiles. But honestly, any tile is a vast improvement over the fake travertine 6" by 6" tiles installed on point (diagonally) that are on the backsplash now.

Could’t find your quartz or paint color (SW snowbound?) as I was curious how the whites worked with each other (and the floor, which is also important.). We repainted our cabinets, but color clashed with the floor and ended up painting the lowers black, to help offset. Just be sure the the whites’ undertones are all the same. May want to look into quartz behind stove before you decide to go that route. https://prudentreviews.com/quartz-backsplash-pros-cons/ If it were me, I’d wait to decide on the backsplash (if not using a slab) until the rest is completed. Bring home tiles to test (and more than a tile or two).
