The lighter grout looks fine. I think that with a darker grout (which is the question, right?) your backsplash + granite would be one very dark material. You have a lighter floor and light accents with the knobs, which is good IMO, and the grout picks that up.

I also think changing out the wallpaper to paint would help a lot. I can't really see the color of the LR on my monitor, but something in a light green/grey tone (moss? sage? not sure of name) sounds right.

Last, I really like the tile + granite! They complement/compliment each other very nicely!

I agree about removing the wallpaper and painting instead. To me, the kitchen is reading as more modern and the wallpaper is very traditional. It looks like the color in the LR works well with the backsplash. Can you paint the kitchen that color?

I love the backsplash/granite combo you picked! I agree with the others--I think you need to paint instead of having the wallpaper. Your kitchen looks nice and modern, but the wallpaper doesn't fit in my opinion. I think a light green would be nice....

Can I ask you what the name of your mosaic tile? I really love it!

well I for one am not crazy about your grout - it seems to stand out more than be subdued. Not sure if thats the look you are going for or not. I prefer more subdued grout lines and in your case, would consider something more in the earth tones realm

First let me say thanks for the advice from eveyone. The living room is light putty gray with a green tint most would call in green in person.

The photo at the very top is with the grout, which is kind of green ... Natural Gray
The other two photos have no grout you only see the adhesive showing through the spaces between tiles. I plan to add wood floors that are close to the color of the cabinets in the future. I agree with the comment that the wall paper look traditional and the kitchen now looks more modern... THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!!!

By the way it is 1 inch slate mosaic tile from Lowes.

i have ubatuba granite as well and we used 4" slate for our backsplash (earth multi). Our cabinets are maple stained in cinnamon but it looks very similar to your cabinet colour. We did put in a wood floor when we did our reno. The grout we used was also natural gray and we painted the kitchen walls butter cream (benajamin moore) and the adjoining family room slightly darker (decateur buff also benajamin moore). At one point i had considered colours from the green family but in the end decided that too much green might not be a good thing (our microfiber sectional in the family room is also green). Good job on the kitchen and good luck.

Check out the pics posted in the "light maple cab/drk green granite" thread (right now it's about 3 threads below yours) by gully926. It looks like you have the same or very similar backsplash as a couple of posters.

Love your backsplash- it's gorgeous! Love all the tones, and different colours. I think you will be amazed at the instant difference in your kitchen, if you decide to tackle removing the wallpaper and painting it that really pretty LR colour.

Tip for removing wallpaper painlessly- soak the paper with a wet sponge- if the 'top layer comes off easily', then soak the paper backing with sponge. If you have a steamer, then steam the paper backing after it has sat and saturated from sponge. Let one section/strip sit while you work on the next, go back and easily pull complete strip off with very little tearing! I also put old towels on floor to catch drips- actually fun doing it this way- secret is to let paper absorb water- no need to scribe or cut into paper.

I love your kitchen with the tile and granite and cabs. I too would change the wall paper. It is a little too traditional for your backsplash. I also would go with paint as your backsplash is "busy" and wallpaper would only detract from the beauty of it.

I might also choose different cab hardware as well. Something more in the silver color to go with the gray in the backsplash and the fridge, rather than the brass and white color.

Wow... amazing how many folks are willing to offer help here... thanks again. Seems like I should start pulling down the wallpaper. Ther cabinet hardware was an item we were planning to change along with the breakfastroom light... I REALLY appreciate everyones input!

I have mosaic slate (more of a uniformly grey/green colour, and we used a sand-colured grout) on my fireplace surround, and I have one word of advice - after grouting, you'll wipe off the grout and there will be be bits of grout in the cleft of the tiles. When its wet you won't see it, but when it dries you will.

GET THAT GROUT OUT of the clefts before sealing! My contractor didn't. I had to have him remove the sealer somehow and scrub the tiles individually before re-sealing. He wasn't happy but neither was I. It just seemed like stupid negligence to me. I can still see traces of grout in the stones and it still bugs me.

I too like your backsplash and countertops. Looks great! The wallpaper competes with the beautiful mosaic tile, and I agree you should paint for a fresh look. Your green LR paint color would be a great compliment to your earth tones.

Thanks for the advice... I actually sealed a few times before grouting to help keep it from sticking. It seems to have worked. I cleaned it rel good after teh grout too. I need to buff it off and seal again... I just have to decide if I want to change the grout color first... I think i will paint a bit of the wall close to the area I have already applied the grout and make a decision. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Ahhh, sealing it first BEFORE grouting - that sounds like the thing to do. Kudos, I never even considered that

Hey there, I have the same granite and backsplash as you! You'll see my pictures on the thread bluekitobsessed was talking about, I'll add the link to it. I also used the natural gray grout because that's what was used on my floors (also slate) and I had a bunch left over.

Just a tip...I sealed first, too...but needed to seal again after grouting as sponging off the excess grout also seemed to wash off most of the sealer, too. I used an enhancing sealer and it also darkened my grout so you might want to consider that if you think your grout is too light.

I also agree with the other posters about the wallpaper being too busy with the tile. The green paint you have is lovely! Mine's the deep terra cotta colored kitchen.
