I only have one 18" deep cab, but I really like the size (not so deep that items get lost). How are you handling that corner? Corner cabinet? Access from Dining room? or blind?

I have a peninsula w/ 16" deep cabs, and they are fine. I use them for cereal, plastic storage containers, and oils/vinegars/a few other often-used foods. The penisula cabs open on both sides -- not really necessary, but kind of nice.

On the corner, (which for me faces the breakfast nook), the cabinet is used for paper products, and a few rarely-used storage containers. If I had to design that side again, I'd add a drawer over that cabinet for small things.

Well, I'm not sure. The cabinet run on the wall with the sink will we be 24" depth so I'm not sure if a super susan of blind corner will work, since it would be connecting to cabinets that aer 18" deep. I would prefer the blind corner if possible.

I guess worse case scenario it could be accessed from the dining room.

Glad to hear 18" and 16" are not too shallow! I may even make the hutch 18" deep, but that would mean the upper cabs would be 12" deep.....hmmmmm

Perfect spot in that corner for a wine fridge (access from Dining room), if that was on your wish list ;).

I don't think a super susan would work if the run is 18". I have no idea about the blind corner, but I would hate to lose access to that spot.

18" cabs are useful, but I would rather see the dining room completely open to the kitchen without the peninsula blocking access. If you don't have the peninsula you could have a longer island.

I have an island with 18" cabinets. I am installing a hutch with 18" base and 12" wall cabinets combined. I was able to use vanity cabinets for each because I was also looking for a counter height of under 36" in those areas.

The only thing that doesn't seem to fit in the drawers are large knives.

why would access from dining room be a 'worse case scenario'?

that's always been the best access i've had with corner cabs.

you can put in drawers or doors. keep placemats, napkins (paper and / or cloth) in there, centerpieces, candles etc. or keep less used small appliances like ice cream maker, waffle maker etc

in one house I kept my chest of good silver in there. handy to bring out to clean for a holiday and to use for the holiday...also some of my other silver pieces - serving bowls, fruit bowl, serving tray etc.

That is a great idea! The 'beverage center' is on my list but the DH isn't convinced it is a good idea. I was thinking of putting the bev center on the end of the hutch closest to the dinning room.

I will have to investigate if a blind corner will work with two different depths.I will have to ask the cabinets guys. I was also thinking of a corner trash pullout.

We aren't ready to completely open the DR to the kitchen. Our architect brought up that idea too.

Sounds like we will have similar hutches!I don't plan on storing large knives in the drawers, but I think they will be my primary silverware drawers.

It would be the worse case scenario us. I'm sure it is best case scenario for others. It would be more useful for me and how I store items, for the access point to be in the kitchen.

I have 13s for one side of my island. It's the one place other than my sink bases that I have doored cabinets instead of drawers. I think they are great! I can put any of my small electrics (ice cream maker, waffle iron, blender, crock pot, hand mixer -- even the KA 6 qt pro mixer will fit in their, but I keep it on the counter. They are also shallow enough that nothing is stacked behind other things. I have become a big fan of shallow cabinets as well as drawers.

Thanks! I'm glad to hear the KA will fit! That is the item I mostly concerned about. I really like the idea of not having things stacked behind large items. I think I'm going to do the 18" deep cabinets. Now I need to figure out the corner!

I'm trying to imagine 18s. I have 15" uppers in my hutch and 16s in my laundry room (original site built). I really like the 13s and 15s better, but it may be how they are used. At a certain point you start stacking things in front of other things and loosing some of the usefulness. One thing I do not miss is digging into the back of cabinets -- especially base cabinets.

I just remembered the other side of my island is 21" deep. The sink base if the only one that really storage on that side and I went and measured. If it weren't for the plumbing in the back 7", I really wouldn't loose much. Looks like even the big dog food container I have (holds 15-20 lbs) would fit in a 15" deep.

I'd measure the things you want to store and make it deep enough for them, but try not to make it too much deeper and tempt yourself to start stacking stuff in layers that get cluttered adn harder to get to anything. BTW, I just measured -- the soda 12 packs are about 16" long and the water bottle cases are about 15 or a bit less. If you would want to put soda 12 packs in lengthwise -- that would push to the 18s.

When I get to replace the cabinets in my laundry room (so I can have a counter -- albeit a shallow one) I am going to do a shallow hutch variation and replace those 16s. I don't think I can go to 18, so I will probably do 15's with 13s above. I plan to take the cabinets over the washer and dryer to the ceiling so I can put seasonal things in there and free up a bit of space in the kitchen. I know I measured canning jars, but not sure about water bottles or soda -- this was good (extras are currently in the garage).

If you want to put a fridge -- beverages, wine or whatever, you can always offset the cabinets and cover that 6" or whatever on the other side with a narrow panel to match the cabinets. You might even give it some thought and come up with a nifty use for that spot. Maybe it's a door that opens and has a place to hang keys, have a corkboard for tacking coupons, hang some tools, ruler, scissors -- lots of things can fit in the depth of a door frame if you have them make an opening in the side as they would if it was a corner cabinet. You could put a backing across it so you didn't open it up to see the back of the fridge. Just a thought ----
