Crack at seam in new granite!! (pic)

I had my new top installed a couple weeks ago and this morning I noticed the granite is crumbling where the seam is at the sink! Lowe's told me not to worry, they'll take care of it. Has this happened to anyone else?

You are going to get a variety of responses just because the seam is at the sink. Just my guess, but I don't think it was done well. The installer I was going to use said he does it all the time (seams at the sink) and doesn't have problems with it, and my kitchen installer backed this up based on kitchens done over at least the last 2-3 years. On the other hand, others will say they refuse to do it because problems are inevitable. What I heard here that sounds right is that it is more difficult and takes time to learn to do it well, but if done right there should not be problems later.

Lowes needs to fix this if they can.

There is only one reason why installed stone tops would crack - stress was introduced to the installation.

You would need to find out what the cause of the stress was and cure that before attempting to fix the crack.

Typical reasons for stress in your situation would most likely be improper support of the original installation or settling or moving of the cabinet bases after installation.

Have the stone guy try to find the cause before just plugging the crack with more glue. Looking at the quality of the seam (what little is visible) it seems that you had a decent craftsman install your kitchen :)

I'm speechless !!!! no I'm not.... I cant BELIEVE that the guy told you that - Who's doing your stone - "Larry, Mo & Curly"? You are getting H O S E D !!!!! Fissures can be glued in place and filled using penetrating epoxy and or the Plexus system - I know - I do this stuff all the time on stones that are all "fissured up" and the customer is willing to keep the piece.... This situation CAN BE RESOLVED..... WITHOUT the method that "Gomer" from "I-Dont-Have-A-Clue" Marble & Granite suggested - SHAME ON THEM !!!! Sophie - People choose Natural Stones WITH Fissures in them every day - for use in their projects. Your "fabricator" is obviously painfully LACKING in the finessing skills required to work stones WITH fissures in them and be successful at the upper end of our Industry... This just smack of "lack of experience" on his part. Where are you located?

I wouldn't assume that the floor joists are sufficient. They usually are merely sufficient to meet code minimums. Code minimums are actually pretty pitiful when it comes to being able to support anything real. Most will need to actually be reinforced to be stiff enough for tile or other hard surface floor coverings. You need to research the length, depth, and span of the joists underneath your kitchen. Enter the information into the Deflectometer (Google it) and you will probably find that they need sistering or cross bracing. Or both.

Superwhite 2014: Pull out a drawer and see if there is mesh adhered to the back of your stone. If so, I wouldn't worry about the crack, it shouldn't spread. It is natural. Those who don't like fissures should get estone or solid surface countertops. I'd grind those black blotches out with a Dremel, fill and polish them in about 15 minutes, especially if they bothered a customer so much.

Joe...also....the corbels under the granite were from previous countertop. There are 2 and the counter on the side with the crack does not meet it...they filled in gap with epoxy. I have a call in to the fabricator company...they also sell the slabs and installed. Am I being unreasonable about the crack? I can see it and feel it. I spent a lot of money for these tops and am also using as full height backsplash. They are supposed to install tomorrow which obviously will not happen until they come out and we discuss the counter concerns.

yes, it took me a few minutes to actually see the seam... the seam looks good, and I see that the crack is running beside the seam. YIKE, I know I would be in a panic, but I am sure that Lowes will take care of it.
