Physicists, engineers and kin: how to calculate energy expenditu

Question: Which is more energy-efficient for making a cup of tea, microwave or electric water pot (boils water then switches off)?

How do you figure this out? Short of watching the flywheel turn on the electric meter, which isn't sufficiently accurate anyway, how to figure this out? I can wave my hands as good as the next guy (no grammar though), bigger cavity for MW, tendency to boil more water than needed, non-immediate switch-off, etc, etc. But is there a way to simply calculate this? I guess even if pure calculation there's all sorts of issues about appliance-efficiency too, as in whether it's actually doing what you're calculating it's doing ... so maybe not.

Just thought someone might know. I sure don't but I'd like to!

TIA.
