When and what -- sealing carrara marble?

So I splurged a little on my tiny powder room sink top and bought carrara instead of granite or quartz. By spurge, I mean I know it is delicate. I'm hoping that in a powder room, it will survive staining. The top came unsealed and I think it would be best for me to seal it now before the plumber comes so I can seal around the faucet holes really well. Does that make sense? And what should I use? The vendor suggested Stone Tech which I think is a DuPont product? I have DuPont sealer and enhancer left from doing the kitchen, but I gather those are different products? Thanks in advance for any advice.

The initial sealer is a different Dupont product called Bulletproof. I used that on my carrara marble. The revitalizer is used afterwards, periodically, to clean the surface.

It's important to make sure you apply the initial sealer correctly. There are lots of threads on this but it seems the biggest source of sealer failure is misapplication.

Stone Tech is made by DuPont and is quite good. I like the "enhancer" version, but suggest you try it on some scrap, if you have any. Generally, it will "deepen" (enhance) the color and character, a bit.

Since we're talking about carrara and StoneTech, I'm in a similar situation.

In the next week I'm having honed carrara installed in my guest bath. When I made my first payment, the fabricator gave me a bottle of StoneTech Revitalizer (Cleaner & Protector). Not sure what it's for. Sealing? Cleaning?

I'm assuming it will have been sealed before install. If not, which product should I use?

We used quite a bit of the grecian marble (incorrectly spelled greecian on the Home Depot website if you are searching for it). We used 12x12s that we cut into 6x12 bricks, 3x6 that we used in one bath as a herringbone pattern and one bath installed in a subway pattern, 6x6, chair rail and the 1x1 hex on the floor. In one shower we installed the Homedepot river rock/pebble mesh mosaic on the floor. We installed the tile in Feb/March so its been up for almost a year and it looks great. There is, however, a great variation in color. It is not a pure white. Some tiles are almost all gray and some have quite a bit of brown in them. Our installer was fantastic at pulling the out and arranging them so that the colors are scattered. We like the color disparity and movement but that's personal preference. Just don't expect a pure white. We did find several boxes that contained noticably thinner tiles (mostly with the 3x6 tiles). We simply packed these back up (save the little boxes it comes in)and returned them to Home Depot. This is a stocked item at our HD so it was easy to get if we needed more and easy to return. The hex mosaic tile was an online only item and we had a HUGE problem getting it delivered. It was through a freight company and they kept promising it and it wouldn't arrive. This could be just an issue in our area (Cincinnati) but it held us up for about a week. (It arrived two weeks later than promised). If I can figure out how I will post pictures as I think the bathrooms turned out great! No extra maintenance. Just sealed it. We were cautioned by the installer about rust which is impossible to remove from marble (often things like shaving cream cans are still metal and can rust). I'm sure newhomeowner is finished with the project but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents for anyone considering the grecian marble.

Susiepearhouse: Try this - take some more of the same sealer you used, put some on a clean cloth, and wipe over a small area that has some of the "spots" you are talking about. rub hard, and try to rub the spots off by getting them wet with more of the sealer - then wipe clean and dry with a clean cloth. Many sealers will exhibit "spots" if some latent amounts of sealer are left on a surface. Maybe a customer does not get al of the excess sealer wiped off of the work area, then when it dries - there's spots where the excess sealer dried........ This is how many spots happen right after the seal coat is applied - not all of the excess sealer got wiped up at the end of the application process...... Does this apply to you and your situation? If so - try my suggestion - it works with many types of sealers - if not, check with the manufacturer to see what they say. hth kevin

I have some deep in the stone, as you described. I also have little dings where we've hit the counter with a pan or something. They're quite small, and not really rough to the touch, though. I do have one spot that looks like a pit that had been filled. It is slightly rough to touch. 2 weeks, huh? Do you have any etches yet? I had some the first day! Couldn't believe it! Of course now I have lots, and they're blending in.... I do love my Carrara countertops!

@avaaustin The process of attaching fiberglass mesh to ceramic/porcelain tile differs from natural stone processing. Mesh on the back of ceramic mosaic usually doesn't have a layer of glue between the mesh "cells". At same time, the main reason of "resin backing" attached to natural stone is to reinforce it and fiberglass mesh is attached using a "glue" that is mostly polyester. It, first, adds an impervious layer to the back of stone and can significantly reduce the evaporation. Secondly, there could be problems with how well the bond is between the mesh and the substrate since dry set or polymer-modified mortars don't adhere to it very well. True porcelain tiles, whether sealed or unsealed, have >0.5% water absorption. At same time, marble is a translucent stone that will still absorb moisture as vapor even after an impregnating sealer is applied. I can't tell you whether Bulletproof sealer will help you in your situation. With properly installed water-in, water-out system and stone with no "resin backing" it is best to avoid any sealer. That's my strong opinion. Sealing the stone but not sealing the grout will not make any difference. Impregnating sealers are all considered permeable but if there is trapped moisture under the stone unsealed grout won't help.

It seems DuPont makes a load of different sealers. I got overwhelmed on the website. Some ward off water, and some ward off oils and water. Since this is a powder room, I just want to protect it from water; just something to keep the stone from getting those dark wet spots around the faucet and handles.

I think I will not enhance it as I like the soft, subtle look of the pre-cut slab that the vendor (Signature Hardware) sent. I had great luck sealing and enhancing my mosaic stone trim in the kitchen, but it definitely made the veining pop.

Regrettably, I don't have a scrap bit to play with, so I'd best get it right.

Calumin, thanks for the clarification on the Bulletproof vs. Revitalizer. It sounds like the Revitalizer will be for cleaning. Perfect.

I'll be here when they install, and will ask about sealing, what they used, whether I need to apply another coat.

MizLizzie, I'm like you, mostly concerned about water and the occasional guest's makeup mishap. I don't want to darken or enhance, also preferring the lighter, softer look.

I did find this -- a Stone Tech high gloss sealer. I wouldn't mind some sheen. I wonder if anyone here has ever tried it? It has the best, albeit limited, reviews on Amazon.

I am not exactly a sealing expert, but wouldn't you want an impregnating sealer like BulletProof? It will preserve the original look (it did for me, you should try it first if you can) and will protect your surface longer. The sealer you linked is a topical sealer. It will change the appearance of your marble, and it won't last as long as BulletProof.

That one does say it's for the most porous surfaces. Dunno. There seem to be more sealers than flavors of Campbell's soup. ???
