No, do not give a cash tip. But, if you have cold pop in the frig it is always nice to offer one for the road.

A little off topic, I tipped the two men who delivered my 48" Thermador fridge....there should have been 4-6 men sent on the job, and I think the two of them nearly were killed by the fridge.

It depends. If they're basically offloading the truck into the garage then the delivery isn't time consuming or difficult. If they're bringing the cabinets into your home (because the garage is full of other remodeling stuff or no garage) then most people tend to get a bit fussier with the care taken and this slows the delivery down. If that's the case, then tipping is an appropriate compensation for the added time and care needed in that situation. Delivery drivers are on a schedule, and are paid by the stop as well as the distance between stops. When you slow things down, you are costing them some money. It's only appropriate that you compensate them for that.

And, if you are going to have your cabinets delivered to the interior of your home, it's also incumbent upon you to protect that interior by laying down hardboard or cardboard for the delivery route and moving anything that might get in the way or get broken. They'll be as careful as possible, but accidents can happen and there's no point in not creating the least accident prone environment that you can!

I did, but in my case the situation definitely warranted it. I bought RTA cabinets, that were shipped on three large pallets and one giant crate. (weighing something like 250, 350, 400, and 800 pounds respectively.) The delivery truck was too big to fit up our driveway (which is several hundred yards long). So I needed to unload the truck onto our pickup truck, and then unload the pickup truck into the garage.

To get the pallets and crate off the shipping truck wasn't too bad since the shipping truck had a hydralic lift gate that could be lowered to the height of the pickup truck bed. Getting the pallets and crate out of the pickup into the garage was a herculean task.

My wife had a young guy who works at her barn come over and he brought a friend of his with him. The three of us had to move the three pallets and the crate off the shipping truck onto the pickup truck (one at a time) and then unload the pickup truck into the garage.

When we finished, I gave them each a crisp new benjamin, and it was the best $200 I spent on the entire kitchen remodel.

Thanks everyone for your responses. It was a very straightforward delivery and didn't feel it was necessary to tip. Soon comes the appliances (thermador columns might be a bear to deliver)so I'll have to figure out the tipping situation there!

Still no. Union or not, they work for wages, not for tips. You've provided them a work opportunity. That's all. Whether paid or complementary, delivery is a continuation of the service you purchased from the store. It is up to their employer to compensate them.

Nor would I tip the salesman, or the dispatcher, or the person who unloaded/loaded the boxes at the warehouse.

Tipping has gotten grossly out of hand.
