What is the distance between your cooktop and the bottom of your range hood?

My 6'2" husband (who is the real swisscook) needs at least 34" inches, but the range hood recommends no more than 24 inches. And we have a soffit to deal with so there isn't a lot of room to play with. Any advice/PHOTOS would help. At this point we're leaning toward an under the cab hood to fit under the soffit; the range is a DCS 30 inch all gas...Ventahood under cabinet hood. THANKS!

Hi swisscook, no answers from me as I am also trying to fit my hood above my range, but just wanted to say that 24" seems awfully low! I thought most manufacturers recommend somewhere around 30" - 34" above the cooktop, depending on the brand. I can't imagine how most people could cook (except for shorties like me) with a hood sitting only 5' high. Maybe the manufacturer can advise you as to maximum height and give you more room to play with?

It's nice to see that your DH can handle a hood 34" from the cooktop. My DH is 6'1" and I was worried about that... Never had a hood before so I don't know how much space he needs so he doesn't knock his head whenever he cooks!

Hi swiss: we're tall (me 5'11" and DH 6'3") so we raised our counters; counter tops are ~ 39.5" tall. The grates for the cooktop sit at least an inch higher, probably more. The space b/w the top of the grates and the bottom of the center of the mantel is about 28"; the distance from the bottom of the fans to the top of the grates is about 28.5".

This is very comfortable for both of us. The hood doesn't come out as far as the front of the counter so it's not in our faces and wouldn't be unless we leaned way over the cooktop (which of course we wouldn't do if any of the burners were on!)

Since I did my kitchen before finding GW, I just followed the lead of the installers and cabinet guy, and didn't think about the fact that the fans are more effective over the back burners than the front (since the hood is set back a bit.) Still works for us because my biggest burner is in back and that's the one that gets the messiest stuff.

I got some decently lit pics today, here's a few more from the collection! A better view of the big one: A bonsai-esque dwarf variety of some kind: This one is a broadleaf cultivar with blotchy colours.. I had to cut it back as its old leaves were not acclimating well and spider mites were starting to have at it. So, I went for a drastic haircut, which seems to have worked out okay, as it's been growing back slowly the last couple months! Might be same cultivar as the big one, not sure though as the "rippled" effect seems to appear in some leaves. I've cut it back each year for two years, hoping to develop a nice looking bushy plant some day out of it. Hard to get a good pic of this one on an iPhone camera but it's certainly one of the stranger ones I have. I think the cultivar was labelled as "devil's paintbrush" or somesuch. Didn't handle going from the garden centre to the home very well as first, but after a couple haircuts its growing well enough. Haven't fully recovered the colour yet though, wondering if it needs more or less sun. Bit of a weird one I haven't seen at any garden centres since getting it.. long leaves like the Banana cultivar but fades to red/pink instead: The second croton I ever bought. When I got it it was very leggy and in a tiny 2" container, I've given it regular haircuts which have done well for it. (The third one I ever bought has since died, as has any of that cultivar I've bought since.. the very-long-leaved brght-yellow ones just don't last long with me for some reason!) This one seems to be a relatively close cultivar to the previous, but the leaves seem different to me, enough to nearly convince me it's a different cultivar.. it certainly grows slower and with larger leaves: Bought this one last week. I noticed today as an added bonus it has started to product a flower stem! I guess it likes me. Thanks everyone for all the great compliments. Im just hoping and praying i get to see more than just a couple of blooms. Theyve bloomed but have been very few. Im now noticing more and more buds since it cooled down and those buds are actually growing. Im checking them daily. As far as whats in my soil. I remember adding Sphagnum peat moss, perlite and organic choice garden soil. I mixed up a mixture of all that with my Georgia clay. Lol. I didnt measure anything. I'm a newbie. I just mixed it all together until i had what i felt like was a good looking and good feeling/texture of what a nice soil should feel like. Lol. When i was done it looked and felt a whole lot better than Georgia clay. I know that makes no sense, but thats what i did. I tried to get it the same feeling and texture of what the soil felt like in potted plants that you buy. I wish i could explain better but thats what i did. As far as what i use for fertilizer, even though some are against it, i use miracle gro. The kind you Mix with water. I use that about twice a week. I read they were heavy feeders and a slow release fertilizer wasnt a good option. I would like to point out that every brug that ive scoped out in my area has not had hardly any blooms this year like they did last year. One lady up the street has one brug with many blooms. Its mostly shaded, yellow blooms and looks very healthy. Three others she has in lots of sun look terrible. They're over 4-6 feet tall with 90% less foliage than mine have. I stopped and asked her the other day how she cared for the one thats mostly shaded. She said she cared for them all the same. She uses slow release fertilizer and only waters when they droop from lack of water. Lol. Weird huh? Ive babied mine and got maybe 12 blooms all season and thats about 4-6 each time theyve bloomed. Others in my area are in the same boat as me. Yet, this lady just neglects hers, hardly ever waters, uses slow release fertilizer, and the one thats mostly shaded has about 20 blooms. Go figure. Its gotta be because its shaded, maybe the yellow can handle the heat. Cause her others look terrible, not yellow. They look like a 4-6 foot tall Bush, 3-4 main branches, with about 15 leaves/foliage on it and one bloom hanging from it. Hey, i cant say to much, lol, shes got blooms. Lmao. Okay ill shut up now.

Maybe not very brightly colored, but how about Cephalaria gigantea or C. alpina? They grow to at least 6' and usually have soft yellow flowers. Coreopsis tripteris has tiny bright yellow flowers that wave around at about 6' in the air. I've read they like some moisture, but mine do just fine without any extra. Filipendula rubra (Queen of the Prairie) has nice pink flower clusters and can get tall. Some varieties of Inula should be hardy for you, they have bright shaggy yellow blooms. If you have a moist spot, there are some tall Sanguisorba species you might try, they look pretty in a mass with smallish red flower heads. How about some of the taller asters? I can't grow delphiniums here with any success, but maybe you can?

You're welcome, Sophia. The placement looks about right, unless you can sink the umbrella a few inches lower so the crown of the plant is about even or slightly above the top so it rests on it instead of having to grow up in to it. You probably also want to invest in a couple of heavy metal pipes, driven well into the ground around the trunk of the umbrella then tied securely to it. Once the roses begin growing into weepers, they create an amazingly effective "sail" and will catch any breeze that passes them. Strengthening the upright stability as much as possible now will prevent you from having to stand them up and fight with them in the wind. Our SoCal winds are legendary and weepers are severe issues here. I learned this the hard way, and with an umbrella just like the ones you have. I thought one strong metal pipe, not a "stake", but a rigid metal water pipe, would suffice, but it finally required three, driven two feet into the ground, as close to the central trunk of the umbrella then all wired tightly together, to keep the structure upright in the winds. Yours may not be as severe, but you know you are going to eventually experience something similar. Securing them well now will prevent hours of totally wicked fighting and potential plant (and YOU) damage later. Plus, you have three of them to worry about. You need rigid, unbendable, rust resistant material such as galvanized water pipes, probably 8' long, driven in as far as you can to anchor the umbrellas. This is definitely a job you want to do ONCE. Good luck!

I think you need to look at the hood's specifications for distance from cooktop.

I was very worried about this too but it turns out to be pretty much of a non-issue here at least; the hood just doesn't extend beyond the countertop and your head doesn't extend over it. Even with my 27" deep under-counter hood and 27" deep stove. I'll post pictures later; can't now.

What is a problem, I've found, is that my range extends just 36" high and I raised our countertop to 37". There's an inch short. Someone sad build a box to set the range on. Another wants to "patch" the sides. Dunno what we'll do, but if it's not a stovetop you're putting in, I would try to think about this in advance... or maybe it's not you but Chicago who did that? Sorry, reading too quickly.

I would max out the distance the manufacturer suggests and then forget about it.

We are in the design phase of our remodel. Just last week, we measured for dh, who is 6'2" and he said 33" would be fine for him. The KD originally had it at 30:, but dh said that was too short for him. 36" is really too high for our kitchen b/c we don't have tall ceilings, so we compromised at 33".
