What is the recommended cabinet allocation for a given width?

It seems that given a certain amount of wall space available for cabinets, there should be some optimum distribution of cabinetry. For example, in my kitchen there will be a 4-1/4', 4', 3-3/4' & 2' lengths in which there could be many combinations in the cabinet allocation.

It seems to me that the optimal width for a single door cabinet is 1-1/2', and for a French door is 2-1/2' (presumes no central divider.) A 1-1/4' wide cabinet could also be used, but it's starting to cut it close. A 1' wide cabinet is virtually useless. I suppose that a 2' wide French could work as well, but I seem to favor a 1/4' filler and 1-3/4' single door.

And then there is the question of whether to have swinging cabinets, or drawers. I would think that with all the drawers that are available with standard swinging cabinets (i.e., on top of base units), that there is no need for any extra drawers. But maybe I am wrong?

What do you think?
