Best types of wood floor - spin off from ammu lux's thread

So after reading Ammu lux's thread, you guys are really making me consider wood floors once again.

It's amazing to me that people can have standing water and even leaks and have the floor survive just fine.

So question for anyone, but especially those who have had leaks without damage, what type of wood do you have?

Is all wood created equal when it comes to resisting damage?

I know pine and fir are super soft, so we wouldn't use those.

My parents and grandparents put in white oak, and that really took a beating so I probably wouldn't do that.

What about hickory?

We would do pre-fab - any advantage there other than the fact that you can rip out just a few to do repairs if necessary.

What's the price range for prefab wood floor per sq ft anyway? Any brand recommendations?

Can prefab be DIY?
