Comments (14)The lead strips between pieces of stained glass are called "caning". You can get caning in pewter, but truly, lead looks enough like pewter that I doubt anyone could tell the difference visually. Just have your local glass artist arrange ordinary window glass in as many "panes" as you want ant divide them with straight pieces of caning to look like muntins. Then install it in the cabinet doors like regular glass....See MoreWhere can I buy the 'glass' for my kitchen glass cabinet doors???
Comments (12)This is probably too late to help but I just went through the same thing. My contractor's glass guy quoted $560 for 9 12" high doors with clear safety glass and 2 24" doors, with white laminate safety glass. I thought that was outrageous so did my own research. My local hardware store owner was willing to do it for $300. In the end I used an actual glass store less than a mile from home and paid $275 for a really great, professional job. The glass was installed with silicone instead of the unsightly clip/screw system....See MoreLeaded glass cabinet inserts- where to buy and how much?
Comments (21)StarCraft -- Ooooh, that cabinet picture! The color of the wood, the glass, the dark hardware. LOVE IT. C-Freeman -- Perhaps I'm biased because I'm a high school teacher, but if I were searching for an artisan, I'd call the local high school's art teacher. No, I'm not suggesting that person would say, "Why yes, I am a glass artisan. When can we meet to discuss your project?" But those people do tend to be rather "clued into" the local scene. They tend to have connections to local artists (because those people like to come into high schools to talk, etc.). I suspect your local high school's art teacher could start you in the right direction. Failing that, run a couple google searches for "stained glass" in your area. I know of three stained glass shops in my mid-sized town: One is a high-end, custom, we'll-make-anything-you-want-but-you-can't-afford-it shop. I saw a full-glass entry door in stained glass /dogwood tree and flowers -- WOW. The other two are much more modest; the owners have examples of their own work -- more like cabinet doors than entry doors -- on the walls, and they teach classes. In addition, our local community college offers classes in stained glass. I kind of think that the community college teacher IS one of the stained glass shop owners, but I'm not sure. I'd be surprised if a search didn't turn up SOMETHING....See MoreReusing old cabinet doors for glass
