Surely the drawer is more convenient to reach into because you can just stand and look down into it? But with a door don't you have to crouch or kneel down to reach back and get stuff off the shelf? I've read a lot from people on this forum who prefer lower cabinets with deep drawers rather than doors for just this reason.
You say your bottom freezer has a pull-out wire basket, well isn't the drawer like that but the basket comes out with the door? So it is one motion instead of two. That sounds like easier access.

We used to have a refrigerator exactly like the one you have now. When it died on us, we replaced it with a French door model with a freezer Drawer on the bottom. I love it. It is so much easier to use than the door on the bottom. Also because it is French Door on the top, it doesn't require as much clearance on the front or side when the door is open. The old one we had required the refrigerator door to be opened past the 90 degree angle to get the crisper drawers all the way out. It was a real issue when trying to plan a remodel. I guess it was fate that it croaked on us before we could start the remodel and therefore were able to plan the kitchen design with much less headache about door clearance. That single swing door was huge and required plenty of room in the front and to the side. Our new one is a Samsung and we are very happy with it.

I had a bottom drawer and loved it. When we did this kit I wanted a no ice no water CD refrig with bottom freezer again. Not a lot of them avail but I now have a door with slide out tray and 2 drawers. While I have to go through 2 motions I will say I found I can organize better.

We bought a French door with bottom freezer drawer. I love it. Don't have to bend that much. It's easy to get things out of. Upper door clearance is nice also, don't have to have the island a mile away.

I now have a bottom drawer after years of top-freezer fridges and everyone in the house loves it. While shopping I did notice that there are different ways the manufacturers have built in baskets/organizers to facilitate finding things. I would really recommend you visit a few showrooms/stores to get your hands on as many as possible. Open and close the doors (some even have easy-open features) and play with the baskets. Keep in mind what you typically have stored in the freezer and try find a basket/organizer configuration that would work for you. Our Samsung FD has an upper tray (6-8 in deep?) that has ice and commonly used items (ice cream, opened packages of frozen veggies, etc). That tray slides back to reveal a deeper drawer with a movable divider. On one side I have bulk meat, unopened frozen veggies, etc. On the other side I have premade frozen meals. There is also a small basket on the drawer itself that we use for icepacks and popsicles. Overall we love how easy it is to find things in it.

I'm with the others who really like the drawer. It seems like a lower door would be a pain -- too much crouching down to see what's in there, and the door would have a wide swing as someone mentioned above.

Visit a few showrooms, look at lots of models, and see what you find the most comfortable. (Bring a tape measure and your kitchen dimensions too!)

I don't like the big drawer - I found myself standing to one side and twisting awkwardly to get things out. I love my Leibherr with the side-opening door, and removable drawers - grab something from the drawer very quickly, or if I want to sort out a whole section of stuff, I just remove the whole drawer and dump it on the counter while I check the contents (and it makes it REALLY easy to clean - I had put some stock in the other day to freeze, but didn't realise the box leaked before it froze. Nice mess to clean up - I just needed to empty the drawer and run it under the tap.

Removeable drawers and side-opening door is great.

When I was little we had the bottom swing door SubZero. When I was in my 20's it was replaced with a drawer with interior drawer. I think the problem comes in how deep the drawer is! A friend of mine has a freezer drawer that is much deeper than the SZ. I think her fridge was designed to hold a lot of frozen convenience foods, so there's way less fresh food space and more freezer space. That's probably the kind with the "big drawer" that people are complaining about.

The SZ freezer, as well as some of the other free standing units on the market, have the freezer compartment more for small things, and assume you'll have a freezer in a pantry or garage for the "real" freezing, and that you're cooking more from fresh. The shorter freezer generally has the swing basket or bottom drawer tall enough for a half gallon of ice cream, or a big container of stock. and the shelf or upper drawer deep enough for the ice maker tray, and small items like sausages, giblets, etc.

I haven't seen the Amana, but I can tell you a like to like comparison on my folks' fridges: The door swung free and because it's so far below eye level it felt like more of an impediment than when the upper door was open. Then the swing out basket blocked the aisle from the other direction. Also, the whole "shut the freezer!" thing contributed, because it was a two step process. First swing the basket shut then the door. Same issue as with roll out shelves in cabinets. The shelf is moderately inconvenient because you have to get inside to reach the back. The similarly shallow bottom freezer drawer with interior drawer doesn't block the aisles much at all. You don't have to pull it all the way out to just reach in for ice or something in the front. You do have to push in the top drawer to access the bottom drawer, but that's not a big inconvenience. I think the drawer is a lot better if it's not too tall for comfort.

My advice to you would be to measure the height of your current freezer, and compare it to the ones on the units you're looking at. Go look in the showroom and try a piece of paper in the bottom and picking it up with your bag (i.e. baby or cat) in the crook of one arm. You'll be able to judge for yourself how much you like it.
