At your island you will be able to sit 5 comfortably but not 6. Seating area usually requires 24" per person and with 6 as drawn the corner people are going to be sharing leg space. It looks like you have room to lengthen your island with 80" in behind so that might be an option to consider. Prep sinks can be 18" in a 21" cabinets and that would still give you 27" of prep space and if your island is all one level then you can just "borrow" prep space from the eating area and do a quick clean up before sitting down. When you put in a prep sink put another pull-out trash beside the prep sink because that is where you really want it. Even take out the other one by the clean up sink and put other storage there. We have our main pull-out trash by the prep sink and then just a small under the sink one where the clean-up area is. I know a lot of people think prep sinks are silly, but with a kitchen of 13'x19' and kids who will be bringing friends over and any entertaining that you do a prep sink in your set-up is a really good idea. You have a lot of counter space already and losing 21" for a prep sink is a decision you won't regret. My kitchen is 10'x20' no island and our prep sink is used every day all the time. I gave up counter space for it and am glad.

The sink isn't a huge one. I should have room behind for the faucet. If I posted pics of the progress you would think I'm crazy. The house looks much worse than you'd imagine. My whole house has to be replumbed. There is a giant hole cut in the floor, and old waste pipes are laying all over the bare car decking. It almost makes me cry to see it. Thanks flwrs. I'm hoping the end result is worth all the stress.

In my house, the kitchen island is not just used for cooking and eating. I have lived in this kitchen and with island for years. So I know how we use it. Because how the house is laid out, there is only 1 logical layout that makes any esthetic or functional sense. So we did not vary from that layout. Like others have said, I pivot 180degree to use the sink when I am working at the island. We use the island more like a center table in the kitchen, rather than the cooking/cleaning surface. My kitchen is about 15x15 ft. No a huge kitchen but not a small kitchen either. We use it to do homework, read the paper, wrap presents, lay out buffets, eat quick meals, pile groceries and more. I had to make a columns of FOR prep sink or AGAINST prep sink on the island. The only time the prep sink made sense was when we had 2 people quite busy in the kitchen while cooking. We only cook and clean about 2 hours total per day in the kitchen. We have someone sitting at the island nearly all day when we are home. If you have a house where the kids sit at the table next to the sink to do homework, visit etc, then the island predominantly functions as a part of the kitchen, then the cooking function trumps the design. In my kitchen, that was not the case; my kids do not sit at the table that is next to the kitchen. They prefer to sit at the island.... Majority of the time we are using the island, the prep sink actually detracted from how we use the kitchen island. I decided to go with the majority function of the house/kitchen/island; no prep sink. I don't regret it. This is a very personal intentional decision on my part. There are moments now and then when 2 sinks would have been nice. But there are more moments where the prep sink on the island would have been PITA.

I have a much narrower galley - so narrow that I went the opposite of the advice here and used shallow lowers just to get myself a 48" aisle. So I envy your dilemmas! I would have loved to make an L work with a few stools. I just wanted to weigh in on the issue of symmetry - I had the same difficulty in persuading the KD who was ordering my cabinets to disregard his normal requirements for symmetry. He practically had a heart attack when I insisted on not centering my sink under the window, and tried to foist a ridiculous 24" wide door atop a microwave cabinet for purposes of symmetry. I told him that I'd much rather have unsymmetrical narrower doors that were less of a head-bonking issue for my family. And some wise person here kept reminding me that you don't typically see a galley straight on, the way you would with another style of layout. In any case, now that it's done, the whole issue of symmetry seems even more ridiculous than it did in theory before hand. The photos above do a nice job of reinforcing the typical view that, even if they are probably more narrow than yours will be. There are a bunch of great galley reveals on this site.
