Carrara Hex tile coutertop - am I crazy?
Comments (26)Ooo -- I just saw that hex tile - I loved it! But FWIW there is absolutely no way I would ever consider installing that in a kitchen. I lived with a kitchen for 2 years that had 4" square blobbley ceramic tiles and large grout space - it was just the grossest thing ever. Even spending hours and hours scrubbing it, still it was always gross in the grout. For me, I just would adamantly never, ever do that again. There are so many edges, 2 per line, and then the interior of the grout is rubbley so it catches anything remotely speck-like. Not to mention the impossibility of really getting anything clean (which may be a silly part of the argument, I don't think you can ever really get shiny surfaces all that clean either, they just look shinier). Personally, I would take absolutely anything at all with no grout in it over anything with grout, no matter how pretty. How about something cheaper, say hammered metal? Are there any metal workers near you who could make a nifty countertop?...See MoreHelp! I am going crazy!
Comments (1)No overhang in appliance cut out areas for frig, range, etc. Most 30" ranges are made to fit in a 30" hole-- measure very carefully, since you don't want big gaps. The 'slanted' thing concerns me: The range should have some adjustment for floors that are less than perfect and you should do a preliminary leveling before the range is slid home, especially if its so far 'out' that it won't fit. But if the cab is out of true it needs to be corrected before the range or countertops are installed....See MoreI want laminate countertops, am I crazy?
Comments (45)Hi, I'm late to the party but I did laminate in my kitchen. For a little more, I could have gotten bottom of the line granite, but the BOL granite didn't have the look I wanted, and I couldn't afford a granite that did. It was as simple as that, so I chose a laminate that had the look I wanted. Should I ever win the lottery, I'll install soapstone or a dark granite with lots of movement. Until then, this will do nicely. I use my kitchen hard--lots of cooking, lots of baking, and teenagers that like to cook and bake as well. I can see some microscratches in the "command center", where we work the most. We always use cutting boards, trivets, or hot pads. It's only visible if you look at it from the side under good light, so I'm not stressing about it. Thanks, Westsider for the nice words about my kitchen! :-) So, no, you're not crazy. If this is what you want, then by all means, this is what you should get. This is your kitchen and it needs to function the way you want it to. Enjoy the process, Cj...See MoreI keep getting told I'm crazy to want butcher block countertops
Comments (50)My husband would prefer the local marble be used around the perimeter, which may need to happen because there's a chance the butcher block manufacturers won't ship it with the sink hole cut as it may not be stable enough, and then we're back to the same place we were at with the Ikea countertops. Well not quite, but still needing to find a finishing carpenter willing to make that cut. It turns out that not even the butcher block makers like cutting undermount sink holes. BUT... the marble would be standard 1.25" tall, and our cabinet boxes are 34" from the floor. The minimum height of the cooktop surface of the induction range we've purchased is 36". I feel like a 3/4" difference between the counter height and cooktop is more of a deal breaker for me than the chance of the butcher block getting gunky around the sink. I can get the butcher block at 1.75" so there would just be a 1/4" difference between the cooktop and countertop....See Moredoraville
