How would you rank Blanco, Franke, Ticor SS Sinks?

Still sink-looking...we will meet with our fabricator this Wednesday to pull slabs...and I've talked with him and the big box that sold us the granite (with Blanco sink included, except now it isn't...long story, other thread. Anyhow, I do believe we can upgrade our sink option that came with our granite and I have been told it is an Eclipse 18 g, 1 3/4 bowl valued at $438, or close to it. Have not yet heard what the upcharge will be for a 16 g.

We can also get a credit and provide our own sink. Scouring the forum I've seen many raves about the Ticor. Seems almost too good to be true...a 16g at such a good price. Are they quiet?

How would you rank the Blanco, Ticor and Franke? I want a sink that has good soundproofing and good shine...and will be the only one we need for a very long time:)

Maybe there are other sinks that are worth considering that I don't yet know about....these seem to be the major players....Looking for a 1 3/4 bowl for our 36" sink base.

I don't really have a lot of knowledge in this area, but in the past week I brought home an Elkay sink from HD, looked at an Eclipse at the fabricators, and today I received my Ticor sinks I bought from Overstock.com. The sink I need is 28/29L inches x 16W single bowl, 18 gauge of course. The Elkay (signature series, I think) and the Eclipse were essentially the same both at 9 inches deep, the Ticor is soooooo much different at 16 gauge and 10 inches deep. It is BEAUTIFUL, heavy and shiny and the grates are a big plus. I can't believe how nice it is! I'm not one to get excited about a sink, but WOW! The HD sink was $250 on sale, the Eclipse $216 and the Ticor $199. I'm keeping the Ticor hands down. Mine arrived in 3 days and are perfect. (I needed two, a smaller one for prep) They are really heavy and insulated with a thick black coating. It won't be installed for a few weeks, but I am confident I made an excellent choice.

We have a Ticor S405D...two bowls. As I discovered today, the larger bowl is big enough to fit 3 mixing bowls (one from my KA mixer) + 2 measuring cups. The smaller bowl would have fit another bowl...but I didn't need it. Instead, I put some of my utensils in it. I also discovered the other day that the smaller bowl is big enough to use or wash my largest colander as well as wash all but my biggest pots. I am VERY happy with my new sink. The Ticor is 16 gauge and I received a SS custom sink grid for each bowl. BTW...I realized an advantage of the grids today that no one has yet mentioned (that I know of)...the bowls, etc. are level so they don't slide or fall toward the middle w/the sink slope! The grids also kept my bowls, utensils, etc. off the floor of the sink so water drained out easily.

Large bowl: 21-3/8" x 18-3/4" x 9"
Small bowl: 10-1/2" x 15-7/8" x 7"

Since the sink is an undermount, the bowls are actually 10-1/4" and 8-1/4" deep.

Our old 2-bowl sink only fit one bowl & 1 measuring cup in each bowl.

In general, I recommend single bowls for sinks less than 33" wide and whatever you like for the larger sink bases (I admit I do like double-bowl sinks...but only in larger sink bases). In addition, I recommend 70/30 sinks (or at least 60/40 if you can't find a 70/30)...where the the large bowl is 70% of the size and the small bowl is 30%. That's what you see in the pic I posted above. This gives you "the best of both worlds". The large bowl is usually big enough for standard cookie sheets, casserole dishes, pots & pans including handles, refrigerator bins & shelves, etc. The small bowl is small enough for small jobs like soaking utensils or prepping (if needed for that) but big enough to fill an 8qt stock pot. (I haven't tried my 12 qt yet, I'll have to check tonight!) We had a 36" double-bowl sink in our old kitchen with equal sized bowls (50/50). I think the bowls were around 16" or 17" wide each. I did not like it. The bowls were too big for the small tasks and too small for the large (we couldn't even fit our 9"x13" glass casserole dish in it b/c of the "handles", nor would the refrigerator shelves & bins fit.) If you have only one sink in your kitchen, I strongly recommend at least a 33" sink base and a double-bowl sink (36" is even better!) If you have a separate prep sink, then consider a single bowl if your sink base is 30" or less. If you just cannot fit a larger sink base b/c your kitchen is so small (I don't know if it is) and you only have one sink, I would still consider a single-bowl. But that's a tougher decision! Ultimately, of course, it's up to you...get what works for you!

It's hard to see in Hollishenry's picture above (if you click the image it will take you to the Photobucket account that includes some other images that I think show it better); there is a slanted lip that extends at an angle down from the lip/flange of the sink (the flange is the part that goes under the countertop and allows the sink to be undermounted). The beveled/angled edge is about an inch or maybe slightly more wide; from there the sink wall goes straight down. The sink itself is zero radius so it is really just a big rectanglar box. The beveled edge is very shiny; the rest of the sink bowl is brushed. The beveled edge allows the cutting board and a wire grid basket (seen in the picture above) to sort of hang above the sink (the underside of the cutting board and basket are angled to match the angle of the lip). I didn't look closely enough at the pictures of the sink on the Ticor site before I ordered it to understand the presence of the shiny beveled lip (I can see it when I look at the pictures now but I didn't notice it before). In my opinion, the beveled edge makes the sink stand out more from the surrounding counter than a more standard undermount sink would (you sort of see the sink more, at least in pictures). That's not a bad thing, just a choice. The problem my soapstone counter fabricator mentioned was that a negative reveal, where the edge of the counter extends slightly over the lip of the sink, would make it impossible to use the cutting board or basket (because they couldn't fit correctly). I'm not that excited about the cutting board (I do like the basket) and I'm thinking I don't like the shiny lip. We have to decide today whether to exchange the SS508 for some other style (maybe S112). I'm not sure what Galaxy's return policy is (they're very nice on the phone) and the whole thing's driving me a bit nuts. But I sure learned my lesson about checking the details more carefully before I start ordering on-line.

Greendesign-I wish I had your budget, I really do. You are blessed to be able to afford such nice things. We are not doing a simple cosmetic renovation. We purchased out fixer upper 2 1/2 years ago, I have been living with rotted formica cabinets that are original to our 1970s house for over 2 years. They have no doors on them, I made some pitiful curtains to put on the outside just so you cannot see the gross interiors. I don't even use them for storage of any items, they are *that* gross. My refrigerator does not have an ice maker, only 3 of my stove's burners work. We need ALL new appliances. I would love to have Viking and Wolf and Thermador, but alas, it is not to be. I am fine with it, though. We picked up our dream home that just 5 years ago sold for double what we paid. I have actually made some beautiful meals here in this pitiful kitchen, so I know that having the best of everything does not mean the food tastes better. Soooo...there **is** an answer to my original question, and thanks to other posters I have found sinks that meet my requirements. I understand that they are not up to par with your standards, but I wasn't asking about that. akchicago-That is a good idea, possibly upgrading the faucet. When we had to replace our shower head, my DH told me to go to Home Depot and only buy one made in the USA. I could not find one! Not one! We "get" that made in USA is better (usually) but it does seem increasingly difficult to find, and the companies are so sneaky about it! If all I was buying was one item, I would search out made in USA along with my other requirements. At this point, I am overwhelmed by the scope of the project, as well as overwhelmed financially. We have been doing craigslist shopping and plan to go to some scratch and dent sales. Seems like sinks are the one thing we are not finding used or at many outlet locations. alwaysfixin-thank you thank you thank you! Going to show that link to DH right now! Now, in agreeing with green...do you mean you put all your pots and pans and china and wine glasses in your dishwasher? Green did not answer that part of my question, so just curious as to what others do. And the Kraus that I like is 35.9". Yes, I definitely want the bowls to be big. My double bowl sink right now is 33" and I knew I wanted a wee bit bigger. I kind of agree that the *point* of a FH sink is to be single bowl...wouldn't you say? If DH and I both prefer double bowl, and we are both in our 40s, I am sorry, we just don't feel like *trying* to get used to something new at this point! But again, I think it is kind of "cheating" and getting the look of a FH sink without being a TRUE FH sink. I just went to check it right now. I set narrow, tall glasses in it everyday and they have never felt "tippy", nor have they fallen over. I have put aluminum cans near the edge and if bumped they can fall over, because there is some slope. It looks flat and it looks as if things sit flat on the bottom until you look really close and realize they are leaning over a little bit. I would describe the slope as perfect: steep enough that it drains well, but not so steep as to make it hard to use or have things fall over. I tried the grate, but I didn't find it terribly useful for my use. The grate is 100% flat though if that helps. The finish seems smooth to me. Is there a rough finish in stainless sinks? Doesn't Ticor have some of those "zero radius" sinks, the ones with the square corners too if that's what you like? I would be careful about TOO flat a sink. I have read here about draining issues. I do have to use the pull down spray to rinse out the whole sink though. I suspect that the blanco's and Franke's have the same slope. There would be no manufacturing cost advantage to a little less versus a little more slope that I can think of and Ticor is the equal (gauge, finish, insulation) of those pricer sinks. - Jim

We are also looking at sinks...the Ticor and Blanco Magnum are in the running. From other threads on this forum, I have heard of only 2 negative comments on Ticor.
1. reveal left on edge with under mounting
2. Some sinks aren't draining wel1. Although, that could be the more of a plumbing issue.

Anyone have experience with Blanco Magnum.

I got the Elkay Avado. It is 16 gauge. so far so good. i got it from this place:

I had the franke before and was very happy with it as well and had it for a very long time. I had the one with the grate that rests half way up and became very attached to that feature.

I wanted this sink, but didn't have a big enough sink base (not to mention it was out of the budget)

The complaints about the Ticor sinks were for the square ones. I have not read a single negative comment about the others, which is why we bought them. They are sitting in their boxes in my garage, but I sometimes open them up and look at them (a real-life version of kitchen porn). :-)

clc08....I liked the Eclipse. I my opinion, it was exactly the same as the Elkay...but the drain was offset to the center back, which I much prefered! Had I not seen the Ticor, I would have bought 2 Eclipse sinks and been very pleased. The price was right and they had the size I needed. They are good sinks.

I have two Ticor sinks that I love. They are nicer than the 18 gauge Blanco sinks that I was looking at, and less expensive.

If I were you, I'd take the $400 credit for the eclispe sink, and order a Ticor for about half that. Not only will you be ahead on sink quality, but you'll save almost $200 as well.

For those of you who have favorably directly compared Ticor to more expensive sinks, you've made my day.

For those of you considering Franke, Elkay and Blanco, IMO you cannot go wrong. They are well established companies that have a well-earned reputation for manufacturing great sinks.

I love my sink, which has a nice patina after three years. I maintain by using different gradations of wet sandpaper to keep scratches at bay and it looking new. I finish off with a fine bit of polish for shine.

Knowing how expensive these bowls have now gotten, I believe I would do the Ticor and if it needed more soundproofing, then I would buy the foam and apply it after the fact. I've done this one other time in another house that we put a new sink that had a tinny sound. You can improve the sound, it just doesn't look very pretty. But hey, how many people look underneath your sink?

FWIW, my Franke sink only has the sound proofing on the bottom and it's amazing. I would strongly urge you to go 16 gauge in any stainless sink if you can afford it.

This may be a bit OT since it seems that you all have the SS sinks. Does anyone have a recommendation for a fireclay, silgranit or farmhouse? Thanks.

I have sherilynn's sink (purchased last year). Franke makes different grade sinks, but the one she has (mine was purchased off ebay) is a fabulous fabulous sink.

I also have the Franke Pro Series (16 gauge) undermount sink. Mine is 9" deep. Everything fits in it. I love it!
I was told that Franke is the top of the line in sinks.
