Anyone with high-density mdf painted cabs?

Both our designer and cabinetry maker our recommending high-density mdf painted cabinetry for our perimeter, and maple for the stained island. They both said if we want wood we can certainly have it. But they said the mdf will hold up better and takes paint really well.

I've seen laminate cabinets at Home Depot and they look really fake - they have a bumpy texture and don't look like wood at all. Our GC friend (who has close ties with the cabinetry maker) said they are not like the HD cabs.

Anyone have high-density mdf cabs? Are they really better in the long run, or are we better off going with wood because they look better?

Apologize in advance if this topic's already been discussed... point me to the right post if it has!
