Cabinet Maker went under
Comments (3)Sorry to hear about this. I've been reading a lot about builders and other businesses going under, and then the customer is left holding the bag because banks and other secured creditors will be given preferential treatment, assuming there are any assets left to divide. Lots of times the company itself owns almost nothing, especially by the time it gets this far. I hope you do get your money back. IMO it should be considered fraud when a company takes a deposit and spends it on something else, then hides behind bankruptcy to get out of paying. Not sure about your case, but sometimes the owner lives quite comfortably, and cannot be touched, if only the company is liable for its debts....See MoreFramed Full Overlay Cabinets vs Frameless
Comments (6)When my husband built our old entertainment system cabinets, he did narrow frames and no frames between the drawers in a section: (For those reading my thread on our kitchen/family room remodel - these cabinets were sized to fit the niche to the right of the old fireplace and went to good homes with 2 of our son's when we got the new cabinets.) The frames he made are only slightly wider than the thickness of the cabinet walls and since there is no frame between the drawers, we didn't lose space to that. The result is framed cabinets with almost as much drawer capacity as frameless. These were inset, but would work equally well with full overlay drawer fronts. We talked to a couple of local custom cabinet makers when we did our kitchen, but they wouldn't consider deviating even that much from their usual framing, but I've seen someone post here who had a custom shop who did it. It shouldn't require new machines for a framed cabinet maker to do this....See Moreanyone sorry they ordered different appliance brands?
Comments (24)Todds, I don't know how to tell this in a few words to explain adequately, so here's the long version: Our oven is the Fisher & Paykel AeroTech dbl oven. I didn't even consider Wolf. They were considerably more expensive for no more benefit that I could see. They weren't really on the short list of ovens most raved about on the appliances forum. The F&P ovens had the cooking modes I thought I'd really use and, as a bonus, the appearance I liked best (I prefer knob controls over glass touch panel). The only thing they lacked that I really wanted was the full-extension, ball-bearing racks which the Monogram ZET models have. That feature, the knob controls, and their price also put them (the Monograms) on the top of my list. The only more expensive ovens I considered was the Miele, for their quality of construction (very high quality control within Miele manufacturing), their accurate performance, and their customer service. In the end, the F&P were close on those points, had the style I like, and the far better price. (I found ours on Ebay for under $2200.) I also didn't think I needed or would use the expensive Master Chef and rotisserie features on the Miele. I think the Wolf was in the same price range as the Miele without any added benefits or as many rave reviews. (Not necessarily any bad reports, but just not as many great ones to indicate great value in the price.) For rangetops, I wanted powerful BTUs for use with propane, 8 burners, and good reputation for consistent performance, durability, and customer service. That put Wolf, BlueStar, and Capital Precision on my list. I believed I'd like open burners most, so crossed off the Capital, and Wolf's customer service swayed me in the end. I also thought I'd like their burner style better, but actually think I was mistaken in that. Knowing that, I would still have a hard time choosing between BlueStar and Wolf, because there have been more negative reports about BlueStar recently, and I've been happy with the rangetop's performance and Wolf's customer service. It's also great that it has a 2 yr warranty while, I think, others have 1. That probably tells you far more than you wanted to know... :-) Feel free to email me through 'my page' if you have questions....See Moreare frameless cabinets better for a small kitchen?
Comments (46)You're so right about finding someone you can work with! We spent many months of "group-think" time at home deciding what to do with our 70s kitchen. At the time it was the two of us plus an adult son who was living at home. (Yes! He's found a "real" job that pays a living wage now. Sadness, he's moved 600 miles away.) After months of "thinking outside the box," we came to the conclusion that our best option was to work inside the box. [Meaning that we eventually didn't change the basic footprint of the space.] That was when we started looking at cabinets and were eventually taken with InnerMost. By chance, the guy at HD was a great fit for us. It was kind of like wandering around Lowe's and running into Green Designs, although I'm pretty sure Green Designs is even better. We had a short flirtation with a custom guy, but it just wasn't working. If it's not working, Big Box, custom, KD, or whoever, it just won't work. Unless there's some big rush, don't settle for people who don't click with you. On the cost: the cabinets will be a large proportion of what you spend. They'll also be around a lot longer than the appliances. Having a fancy 'fridge or a gorgeous backsplash is pretty much icing on the cake of a kitchen reno. The bones of a reno is the cabinets. Maybe having to do something about the structure of your floor will be an expense there's no way around, but after that, the cabinets are the big thing. You're doing all the right things to find ones that will suit your needs and wants. Dorm 'fridge notwithstanding, try not to rush this planning stage - you'll be happier in the end to find the "right" cabinets and the "right" people. P.S. If you end up going with Bellmont, be sure to post after they're in and you've used them for a while. That's not a brand that we see much here and it's always good to hear from someone who's been there IRL....See Morejoann23456
