It prayers for Oklahoma City and surrounding areas

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people affected by the horrific tornados. It truly puts the demo that took place here today in perspective. I am grateful to have dining tables and a utility sink to help us get through when so many have nothing left but the clothes on their backs.

I've been watching and praying all afternoon. One of my sons lives in Shawnee, OK and was spared from yesterday's tornado as it passed north of his home. The Moore tornado is so much worse and the devastation difficult to wrap one's mind around.

Hi everyone! I've been a member of the Oklahoma Food Coop since early in 2005. I joined when there was only about 300 some odd members. The coop is now over 1000 members! At the risk of coming across as an advertisement for the coop, I'm going to give my view, but really, I don't get anything in the way of any benefit, monetarily or otherwise, for providing this info in a positive light. but being as it's just me, I don't think I'd ever be able to eat it all. Not really an issue. You can order as much or as little as you'd like! You can order one lb of bacon from a farmer who raises all natural pigs, 1 bar of soap from a local Oklahoma producer than uses all natural products, and/or 1 dozen eggs laid from pastured chickens. The ordering system is an easy-to-use system of on-line ordering & a once-a-month delivery day, on the third Thurday of the month. We're really too far from OKC to be able to take advantage of this The delivery locations are all over the state & they're adding more locations all the time! Southern Drought Creeping Towards Oklahoma

Jessaka, Most of the time, our water lines and water hoses don't freeze here, but when they do, I water young shrubs and young trees by filling up a 5-gallon bucket in the house and carrying it outside. It is rare that I have to do that, though, because our winter cold spells at my end of the state are usually short-lived. Also, I only water trees or shrubs the first couple of years after I plant them, and after that they're on their own. Currently, I don't have any trees or shrubs young enough that they'd need supplemental irrigation in the winter. Larry, We have a lot of issues with low water tables in the droughty summers, more than you'd expect considering our proximity to the Red River. Of course, in bad drought years, it almost completely dries up too. Some water districts in Texas have been suing Oklahoma trying to force us to sell them our "excess water". I think they need to leave us alone and build their own nice, big, expensive reservoirs to provide water for all their nice, big expensive cities and housing developments that they build non-stop, year in and year out. They are building first and not even considering where the water will come from to support all the new communities, and I say that as a native Texas who lived there the first 39 years of my life. I want them to keep their hands off our water because in drought years there is not enough of it, and it will be even worse if we are forced to sell water to them. Susan, Drought conditions mostly just mean you have to water more, water more often, perhaps shade the plants with shade cloth during the hottest weather, and watch carefully for pests which migrate to green, irrigated areas when everything else is turning brown. Spider mites are more of an issue if you have low humidity and heat. I get around that by spraying the tomato foliage with liquid seaweed. (Usually, I try to avoid getting any water at all on the tomato foliage, but in drought years, you need to put some moisture onto the foliage to deter spider mites....they love hot, dry, dusty conditions.) The lower humidity that accompanies drought can be wonderful because high humidity impedes tomato pollination, but low humidity does not. I've had plants like Big Boy and Better Boy flowering and setting massive loads of fruit when the temps were in the 105-113 range for days on end. It was amazing, and after I saw that, I almost wanted to move to a desert..... The higher temps that generally accompany drought mean that mulching is more important. Watering with soaker hoses or drip line is more important, especially if you're in an area where water is rationed. I'm not suggesting anyone risk getting a ticket for watering on the wrong day if they are under even-odd rationing, but.....if your soaker hose is underneath mulch and no one can see it, then no one will when know you're watering. In extreme heat (and to me, extreme heat is when we're over 100 degrees for days on end with no rain at all and very low humdity), my tomato plants are happy with 6 hours of sunlight, and stressed if they get more than that. I shade them to keep them cooler in the extreme heat. Shade cloth is a marvelous invention! Other than the aforementioned spider mites, my worst drought pests are grasshopppers because they migrate from the hundreds of thousands of acres of native grassland that surrounds us into the green irrigated landscapes. In a city setting, you might not see them in the huge numbers we see them. Another bad drought pest is the leaf-footed bug and the stink bug. Both seem worse the hotter it gets. Even more alarmingly, when rainfall is rare, everybody is thirsty and you'll often have more trouble with birds, squirrels, possums, turtles, etc. coming to your plants and pecking the tomatoes because they need water. To combat that, I have several small wildlife "ponds" ranging from about 1' in diameter to 3' or 4' in diameter that I fill daily with the water hose. If I provide them with a ready source of water, they tend to bother the tomatoes a whole lot less. Deer, though, will come shockingly close to the house to eat anything green during drought. Dawn

My Prairie Lawn in Oklahoma

wiscomitom, around here there is not a lot of appreciation for the native landscape. What I mean is a section or area of grassland prairie is usually viewed as having 'nothing out there'. Its not a visually dramatic landscape like forest, mountains etc --- what people perceive as a beautiful view. When the city develops they build the structure, put in concrete roads, parking lot and such but they also dig out or kill off the surrounding native grasses such as big bluestem, little bluestem, sideoats grama etc along with various types of milkweed, Maximillian sunflower and other types of sunflowers along with various other native species which are actually attractive and offer nice seasonal changes. Instead of leaving that, they square the remainder of the area off into bermuda grass which is then regularly sprayed with chemicals and mowed which ends up as a boring square of deep green sitting in the prairie. I'm sure you are familiar with what I'm talking about. I'm not just referring to housing additions, its large places like tech schools and business where it would be less expensive and actually more attractive left as original prairie. You'd think maintenance cost would factor in even if they can't appreciate the prairie. I'm close to downtown and have chosen to bring the prairie into the city. A complete opposite view but I am in a very teeny tiny minority of homeowners who is doing anything like that here (I only know of 3 others in the entire city). Thankfully its coming around and the state buildings, many street medians, businesses and the downtown area is being replanted in native grasses used as decorative bedding plants, all professionally planned out and arranged. It looks rather sophisticated and modern actually, sort of cutting edge in fact.

The same storm has been going over my house for several hours now. Our one window that actually opens is rattling every time the wind blows or lightning strikes. It is pouring right now.

Not that it is really good..... but the only thing good is that OK City almost always gets the tornadoes during daylight hours. You cannot see them at night. That is when they always hit in my area. No sirens where I live either to warn us. Still lots of lightning, wind, and rain.

My thoughts are with anyone dealing with this tragedy. To all of you in Tornado Alley, stay safe.

The coverage, especially of the elementary school(s) and the first person accounts, is just heartbreaking.

On behalf of the OKC/Moore area, thank you sincerely for the prayers and kind wishes. It was south of me, but less than a mile of my brother. His family is fine. But it's heartbreaking to see the many people whose lives have been turned inside out.

Storm finally stopped here in SE Oklahoma. No tornadoes where I live. Poor OK City gets them worse than we do usually. Daylight hours and warmer. Has anyone heard any more about the missing two dozen students? I hope they find them soon.

Peke and Nutherokie, I'm so glad you're safe. My heart is breaking as I watch the coverage and hear the reports from those who lived through it.

Peke, that must be so scary to live where they don't have the sirens. Do you have one of those weather radios that can warn you when severe weather is headed to your area (I think they warn by county)?

Holly-Kay, thank you for the hug! I wish my son could move back to CO, but he has a great job at a wonderful engineering company in OK and has made many good friends. But I can't help worrying when it's spring and these storms start brewing.

Glad to hear people chiming in tonight safe and sound - Peke and Nutherokie - yet your past few days sound so terrifying. A local friend there who worked in Moore for many years had debri from Moore shower their property. On pins and needles re friends, as many here are the same I imagine.

Last year we didn't have much spring rain. This year it looks like we will have a lot. At last report nine children died in the school. Many more are injured. It stormed all night...off and on during the search in Moore.

My heart goes out to all the parents, spouses, and children of those who lost their lives, and also to all those who have lost their homes and possessions. It's wonderful to hear from our GW members who are safe.

So glad to hear our GW'ers are safe. I am hoping to get some batteries and flashlights to Oklahoma through our church.

I am so heartbroken for all the families affected especially the ones who lost their children.

Schools are not really designed for tornadoes. I never understood why they do not plan for tornadoes when they design schools. They have us take the children in the halls, sit on knees, put head on floor, and cover heads. Some get to go to the restrooms and sit the same way. Have you ever seen or smelled an elementary school's bathroom?

Maybe that is something we could do. Talk to legislatures about making schools safer in design. Redo front door areas so people cannot get in just because they want to. We all think we should be able to walk into "our" schools, but times have changed. People do crazy things now.

Then build a saferoom in every classroom. More and more other states are getting tornadoes, not just tornado alley. We saw more in other states last year than we had in ok last year.

I just hate to see the children at risk. Peke
