colours for backsplash that work with soapstone

hello all,

I'm looking for backsplash advice, in particular, tile colours that you have found go successfuly with oiled soapstone.

The kitchen cabs will be white shaker ( BM Accadian white ) the floors quartersawn white oak with a med brown stain. White apron sink, integrated fridge/DW, stainless range/hood.

We are concerned that we will end up with too binary a kitchen - white with a black stripe through the middle. We want to warm it with a nice tile colour or style. Maybe a warm marble tile? Or a coloured arabesque - would the "up in smoke" or "Sun Kissed Moroccan" work, especially with the greenish hints in the dark soapstone? Any and all ideas/pics welcome.

P.S.

The house is a traditional 1920's bungalow style with simple board trim, oak and fir floors.

We are using soapstone with natural cherry cabinets. For our backsplash we're going with a fairly intense green tile ("Bright Yellow" from Heath Ceramics). It's almost a chartreuse. We wanted something bright to bring out the green in the soapstone. Hopefully it will work!

I used a seaglass colored 4x12 glass tile in a random installation with my ss and natural QS oak

Just a thought...when our tile was being installed, before it was grouted, there was much more contrast, and the tiles stood out more individually. The grout turned out a little lighter than I had hoped, so the final product was more monochrome. It wasn't disappointing enough to have it redone, but I definitely would have insisted on the look of darker grout had I known how different it was. We toyed with the idea of accent tiles for a long, long time (this was the main reason it took us three years to get the backsplash done!). In the end, we decided against it because we figured we could accent with items on the counter, and that would eliminate the problem of getting sick of some accent. We don't have soapstone but our granite (Impala Black) is a dark gray our cabinets are a medium dark cherry. The backsplash is Jeffrey Court Fire & Ice Quartz Brick. Here is a link that might be useful: Jeffrey Court website

How wild is the Python? Quiet? then maybe you can go with a louder backsplash. Our SS is busy, so even though DH was not a fan of the white subway, we are putting in a larger than usual white sub (4 1/2 x 8 1/2) with some Sumi-e glass as accent behind range, by pass through window and behind hutch. To be installed next week!!!! I liked the though of marble BS, but it just competed too much with the SS.

I was planning on having a soapstone backsplash behind my gas range top, but it couldn't be done. It was due to the style of the range(somehow regarding the clearance space and how my walls were constructed) and I had already purchased the range top. Make sure you work with your soapstone fabricator before purchasing your appliance so that it all works out. It is one of my kitchen regrets.

I'm worried about the same thing with my new kitchen. White cabinets,stainless appliances, and absolute black granite. I'm considering a mosaic with clear and frosted glass, stainless steel and marble. I've also seen a beautiful grey glass subway here on gw that I really love. Between the two you mentioned I like the 'up in smoke' better. It's a really pretty tile.

I have very similar colors (BM Chantilly Lace shaker cabs, SS appliances and hood, dark brown floors), except I used super white quartzite on perimeter and island. We used soapstone for our beverage/wine bar and that was the stone that was harder to match a colored tile with. Ended up going with blue-grey ceramic tile... complements well with both the SW and the soapstone, which has a blue-green streak thru it. Here are photos of my soapstone, the beverage counter and the whole kitchen.

I used a fairly bold green and I love the combo. (Finished pictures to come in a day or two!) But, we had painted the room a blue/gray first (SW Krypton). I was really loving that color with the black counters and cream cabinets too.

Oh jeez, Dragonfly, could your soapstone be any more gorgeous? I love the blue-green and how the streak runs right through your sink.

Dragonlfy - that's very much the look that we are going for - a nice colour that compliments the soapstone but still leaves it the star while reducing the white/black/white syndrome.
Ultimately the arabesque is probably too bold/fancy for our kitchen/house and glass tile a touch modern.

We have the same problem. This is a picture of our SS slab. We will have a 6'x10' island and fortunately our kitchen is huge and can handle all the movement in the stone. I am making our tiles and cannot figure out if they should be closer to the color of the SS, or a lighter more neutral color. Our cabinets are cherry (natural without stain) and the other countertops will be a dark sage green cement.
