Do you have a 36' high range with a 34' counter?

We are planning to have 34" high countertops in our new kitchen, including an island. The island is where our stove will be.

The trouble is, we have not been able to find a range that is 34" high and our architect insists that a 36" high range, even if it can be slightly adjusted down in height, will look odd.

Searching through this forum, I have found one person who mentioned having 32" high counters with a 36" high range and liking it, but I can't find any other mention of what people with ADA-height counters are doing for ranges. We also thought of putting in a gas cooktop with a separate oven underneath it, but that doesn't seem to be easy to do either.

Surely this must be a common situation! If you have a 34 inch high counter, did you get a 36" high range? Does it look all right? If not, what kind of range or cooktop did you install?

For that matter, when ranges are said to be 36" high, does that include the grate over the burner?

This came up recently.

Go to AJ Madison and look at ''drop-in'' ranges. They are quite short, under 30''. Check the installation manual to see if there is any reason the cabinet below can't be just a few inches tall. If that is okay, then it will get your 32'' height for the range top.

I would not like burners elevated significantly higher than the adjacent counter. Eventually a pot will get nudged off the burner grate and tip over, spilling boiling stuff all over the counter and some unlucky child. Or you'll be moving a pot from counter to burner, and catch the bottom of the pot on the burner grate, like tripping over a sidewalk crack. Also a pleasant stay in the burn ward.

For the same reason, I like continuous grates.

Just to clarify the parameters of my question, we want to have a gas stovetop (whether in a range or just a cooktop), 30" wide.

Sorry, I have 32 1/4 inch counters with 35 1/2 inch range. (I just measured, believe it or not)

Love it, love it love it.

The counters were a tiny bit higher before because I had laminated 4cm marble that were recently replaced with solid 3cm marble.

Have been going bananas trying to figure out what to do. In a small kitchen we have been really considering a viking dual fuel white stove - 36" - it's nearly a sure thing. We like the island trim option, the flush look, the color, precision control of all burners etc.... But are there other ones we should consider? Thermador pro harmony? (bummer is stainless) (GUIDELINE we need a pretty low profile in the back as it's acting like an island and it's in the counter so close to 24" is perfect) Any advice? We've ruled out 5 star, american range bertazzoni... The contenders are VIKING, THERMADOR, WOLF (depth concern) and Fratelli evolution. The fratelli is interesting and pretty sweet but the concern we have is the house is pretty expensive... The only draw back really is the little back guard vent in the rear. Price is perfect and it's really good looking. The other fratelli models won't work because they are too ornate. The kitchen design is sleek and pretty minimal. It's a high end project and we're totally over budget but don't want to go super cheap at the end...Help...must decide soon!

Do a search for Trailrunner's kitchen (use Google if you have to). Her photos are fattening because there is always good looking food, but if you can get past the food, there is a lovely wood countertop under a high BTU and seriously used gas cooktop.

That 1/4" does matter--that is a big gap for crumbs ect to get under. I had a bigger gap and that is what made me cry when I found out my KitchenAid slide-in range wouldn't fit flush with the 2 cm Silestone countertop. HomeDepot wanted to raise the countertop next to the range but the countertop guy said no--better not to raise just a section. To make a long story short I had to do all the measuring, calling KitchenAid customer service (they were no help), dealing with HD and countertop guy. In the end HD had to go to 3cm counter (per countertop guy), took off range feet and we still had a 1/4" gap. After all of the changes the solution to rout out a 1" strip of the 1/4" thick tile on either side, under the range, so the metal slides on the bottom of the range to slide in on, came from, of all people, the Sears guy that delivered the range. Not sure who is to blame but I would keep after one of them to fix it. Do you have a concrete floor that could be routed? If the floor is wood could the range section be cut out and replaced with a thinner piece? HomeDepot was going to do the routing but my husband didn't want to wait on them so he did it with a hammer and a chisel. Let us know what you decide to do.

I am so sorry your KD and flooring guys are idiots. Take a couple of deep breaths and a minute amount of alcohol and at least one day before deciding to accept or reject the proposed solution. The correct thing to do is re-install everything after raising the cabinets with another layer of subfloor. It needs some thinkin' about what the consequences are and who's paying for them. It really doesn't have anything to do with the range being a slide-in. The same thing would have happened with numerous ranges. Be careful of the dw because the next problem usually occurs when the dw needs service but can't be removed without damaging the finish floor. That has happened to multiple people over the years.

I don't know where you would find a 34" tall range. I can tell you that a standard range meant to fit a standard 36" countertop is actually a little taller than 36". Usually by not more than 7/8". The range height is usually measured to the side of the range housing and so I don't think it includes the height of the grates.
You may want to look for a drop-in gas cooktop and an oven to fit underneath. Although, with a 34" countertop height, the oven will likely be small. Perhaps a Miele speed oven. Depending on your layout an oven may be able to be located elseware in your kitchen.
If you're left with no option then it wouldn't be terrible to keep the range at standard height and build an elevated surround a few inches wide around the range to act as a small landing area for plates or spoonrests. As long as it matched the countertop material and cabinetry, it may not look too out of place.

Mossfern, you give me hope that things will work out okay if we punt and just get a nice 36" range :-) If others have a positive experience with this setup, I would be reassured to hear about it.

Willtv, thank you for the information. We did also look into the cooktop + separate oven option (I asked about it a week or so ago because finding a short enough oven was a problem.) We plan to have a separate wall oven elsewhere in the kitchen. I don't think we have the counter space to build a surround -- there is only 18" allowance for counter on either side of the range. (We also talked to the architect about having the island at 36" height while the rest of the kitchen counters were at 34", but he didn't think that would look good either.)

JohnLiu, thanks for your suggestion and you may have responded to my question last week, too :-) As far as we can see, all the short drop-in ranges have electric cooktops, and we definitely want gas. But I have just gone ahead and written to AJ Madison to see what they have.

More input would be most welcome.

Today we got our beautiful new countertop, 34-3/4 inches high. Our range is 35-3/4 inch, so it is one inch higher. The installer's suggestion was to take off the four adjustable feet and let the range sit on the metal frame. That would only get us about 3/8 inch lower. Not sure what we will do except search for a manufacturer that has a lower adjustment height. We are hearing that this issue is coming up more often as people are installing the thinner countertops.

Everything is designed as a whole system around the 36H measurements. Cabinets and appliances. Thinner counters require the use custom cabinets at a taller height to reach the industry standard system height.

As far as I know, this is the only real 34" high model: WEE515SALS by whirlpool, only available in the US it seems.
