The faucet and dispenser holes are filled with scraps from the cut-out. This is a job I did last week; removing a failed polyester bowl from a polyester solid surface top and replacing it with a stainless steel sink. No countertops were removed in the process. It isn't that much different with stone, the trick is making sure the footprint of the replacement is identical to or larger than that of the original. I've had budget-conscious clients that didn't care that the negative reveals were off on their replacement sinks in stone. Sink, faucet, soap dispenser, and disposal replacement, plumbing, top refinish and cleanup (ooo..it's messy) just over 3K. That's a Mirabelle sink made in Vietnam. Nice.

"They do take a long time to fill." Sorry to go OT, but I had to respond to that, though I do NOT want to get into a bowl debate. I've had single bowl sinks for the last 14 years, and I don't think I've ever filled it. Not once. First, because I have a dishwasher. Second, because for hand washing pots and pans, I fill the pots and pans themselves to let them soak, not the entire sink. If you can't lay your pan flat, because of a divider, then you would have to fill the sink to cover the tilted pan. Third, for other things I need to hand wash, like my mother's silverware, I would fill the sink a few inches, that's all. As to the topic of centering the faucet, I think it really depends on your setup whether it will bother you or not, so it's hard for us to advise you. Doing the mock up is the best solution.

As others stated, the reason why most people no longer want a 50/50 sink is b/c the bowls are: Too small for larger items (think cookie sheets, larger pots & pans, etc.) Too big for smaller jobs, or at least oversized for smaller jobs Personally, I like two bowls for a cleanup sink. We have a 60/40 sink in a 36" wide sink base and it's perfect for us. The small bowl (10.5" wide) is just the right size for soaking small items such as silverware (although, now that we have a Bosch DW it's no longer needed -- it was required when we had a KA!) It also is just big enough to fit our stock pots for filling as well as all our colanders for draining pasta. The large bowl (21.5" wide) is large enough to fit flat all our pots/pans, cookie sheets, roasting pans, Vent-A-Hood insert, and all but one shelf from our refrigerator (the lone shelf that doesn't fit flat is the 36" wide shelf). Between the two bowls, you can have several tasks going at the sink -- washing things that either didn't fit in the DW or shouldn't be put in the DW, filling/emptying pots, secondary prep, etc. (Note that I do not like nor do I have room to store dish bins. I've always found them too confining for washing dishes -- we had to use them when we were remodeling and I didn't like it.) [Our prep sink is a single-bowl -- 15.5" square interior space (in a 36" corner sink base). It's too small to be used for any type of cleanup, but it's OK for washing/rinsing veggies/fruit, etc. When we build again, I plan for a larger prep sink -- probably one that fits in a 24" sink base.] . However, I will say that if you want a double-bowl sink, then you should have a large sink base -- at least 36" wide. Anything smaller and you won't have room for decent sized bowls. If you cannot fit a large sink base, then I think a single bowl is probably the way to go for overall functionality.

My husband (who does most of the dishes) prefers the 60/40 sink over a large single bowl. He says, "no thanks regarding the dish bin - the last thing we need is another item to find a place to store when not in use and one that takes up quite a bit of space on top of that!" However, I agree with Shannon, a 36" sink base is really the minimum I would recommend for a double bowl sink. Our double-bowl cleanup sink (in a 36" sink base) has one bowl 21.5" wide and the other 10.5" wide. The larger bowl is plenty wide enough for all our dishes, pots & pans (including handles), casserole dishes, cookie sheets/baking pans, roasting pan, and all but the 36" wide shelf in the refrigerator -- and that wouldn't fit in a 33" wide sink either. The smaller bowl is perfect for handwashing the few things we hand wash -- primarily knives -- and also a place to soak things if needed. It's also just big enough to hold my 8-quart pot for filling, if needed, and fits my largest colander for draining gluten-containing pasta. (No gluten goes into our prep sink! Yes, you can scrub it to remove gluten, but this way I don't have to worry about it and I don't have to constantly scrub it.) Personally, I don't care one way or the other, as long as I have at least one bowl wide enough for prepping and, if I'm honest, 21.5" is probably wide enough for any prepping task. My prep sink is only 15.5" square (interior) and I often find it a bit too narrow, so my next Kitchen will have a 24" sink base for the prep sink. The cleanup sink will be whatever my husband wants! Larger bowl: Note that it holds two full-size mixing bowls + a medium size mixing bowl + misc other items -- all at one time. It also fits my widest cookie sheet.
