Starting demolition early!

I'm not sure whether to be excited or scared -- the GC called this morning to say he thinks we should start this Thursday AM, instead of next Monday, because of the additional items we've added to demolition (tile floor, ceiling soffit, popcorn ceiling).

We started setting up the temporary kitchen yesterday, but didn't do much because I thought I'd have next weekend to pack everything up. Yikes! I can do it, though, because I'm not teaching this semester.

We just found out that the big Kohler stages 45 sink will fit, so we are going to splurge on that; ordered the sink faucet; and ordered the GE profile range hood.

I am mostly excited, but I also feel the point of no return approaching rapidly.

Anything I should be thinking about as I pack up the rest of the kitchen?

It's better this way. It doesn't give you extra time to stress. You'll be too busy packing. I took out my penensula, too. Best decision of the whole remodel. Removing that and moving the fridge over those few inches might make that unusable corner more attractive. Can your microwave go there? It's a small space?

You might be tempted to weed stuff out as you pack. Don't. Just pack it up and get the boxes out of there. It takes longer than you think. When you put stuff back in your new kitchen you will find a few things that had been "lost" and you will want to use them again because you'll love your new kitchen so much you will spend more time there.

OK, finally here are some pictures, as of today. Things aren't entirely done, but it is looking like a kitchen now. The cabinet color isn't very true here - its better in the next picture. The cabinets are cherry with a cordovan stain. The brand is Canyon Creek. All the cabinets lack pulls. I have bar pulls on order. This side of the peninsula will have a fake door panel and drawer panel at the left. (They had to be reordered.) The counters are Venezian Lido. Its not quite right yet. (Some issues.) It should be blacker. The hood is VentAHood. The range is DCS RGTC-305 all gas self clean 30" five burner. The door and drawer front for the trash pullout and the fake ones next to them came in wrong - still waiting. The sink is a Franke Orca. The faucet is a Brizo Venuto. Here is the a seam in the granite to the left of the sink. I think the installer botched it and I'm waiting to see if it can be fixed. He ran an abrasive brush over the seam area, leaving a 2" swath that looks different than all the rest.

I wanted to give an update on our kitchen remodel. We took out all the cabinets by mid April. We sold them all with the countertop and the cooktop and wall oven for $1000! I was pretty psyched about that. Then we took off to Grand Cayman for a week of relaxation. We got back this past weekend and took everything out of the first floor (except for 1 room) and taped up the doorways and the sunken living room because this week my floors are being sanded and refinished! Here are some pictures. Our cabinets get delivered a week from today! But before that DH needs to recess the fridge wall. He says he will only do it 3" since that is the only size fridge that will fit thru our door into the house from the garage. But I might try to make him change his mind. Our main front door is wider and we might want a deeper fridge some day. We are also cutting the sheetrock out from the ceiling and redoing the recessed lighting, so that needs to be done before cabinets. And the plumbing for the prep sink and pot filler. And we need to decide on window size and purchase windows. We also moved our laundry from the small mudroom off of the kitchen to the 2nd floor. So now I have a laundry room off of the master bedroom. DH is out of town for work now so after these floors are finished there will be a week or so with nothing going on.

Well, what sort of advance planning ought to have happened or not is, at this point, neither here nor there. Caroline, my advice would be to choose your floor first, as that's going to be your most limiting option. Then countertops. (And if you want white, I'd second the suggestion to look at white corian) Then cabinet color, and finally choose a backsplash when everything else is in place. You might also give a look at Holiday. They have some nice options and if you take a leaf from Helen's book and use a few inset cabs strategically, you can get very close to the look you want. It's sometimes worth also checking around for a local cabinet maker. They vary wildly in price and quality, but sometimes can be excellent bang for you buck. I do think you really want a KD in on this, so you get the best layout and options possible. While you look for one, set up some Pinterest boards with images that appeal to you - and don't forget to mark each pin as you save it to remind yourself what about that image you liked! Maybe go find the thread for CP's finished house, as well. Her kitchen is lovely, and I think has a lot of elements you'd find appealing. Use her as a resource, since she spent a lot of time assembling an excellent Craftsman style kitchen. I'd also suggest not going overboard on the Craftsman detailing - it won't work very well with your house. So, it's as well that you don't want to do the intricate woodwork on the doors. I'd probably also avoid the "prairie" style grilles on any glass-front cabs. Craftsman, done authentically, is a lot of look and it might fight with the other elements you have going on there. I think you want more "Craftsman Lite."

And from someone who just had popcorn ceilings (and walls!) removed in her reno - good call!

Great!! Better to start a few days early just in case. We should finally have good weather this week (after today's rain), so go for it. You're ready--you've done your due diligence, you've done your research and you've been reading how it can get grueling so you're mentally ready!

Start dreaming of your new kitchen and embrace your toaster, your George Foreman grill, your blender, your Crockpot and your microwave. And don't forget that there's always cheap food at Ikea Cafe....and stock up on the essentials: wine and chocolate!

Hooray for starting early rather than late!!! That doesn't happen very often!

One thing I wish I'd done -- insist they cover the openings/doorways to the rest of the house before demo starts. Our guys, who are great otherwise, didn't put up any sheeting until the day the wood floors got sanded, and then I'm not sure it would have been done if I hadn't asked if I needed to do it or if they would. We ate dust for a week before that, as they did all the demo. Not that the covering keeps all the dust out, but it should help!

One bit of advice, is if you have cats, keep them contained at all times. Our contractor (he's wonderful & from the East Bay) demolished last week and we didn't see that there was a way that the cat could crawl in the wall. She was in there for over 18 hours. We almost had to stop construction.
We also put a large board over our claw foot tub and that has made for a good place for dishes, like a large counter. Putting dishes in a clear plastic container allowed us to find things quickly. I'm not sure how a crock pot would work - they have had to turn our electricity off a lot! Trader Joe's has some great frozen oatmeal that is very good in the micro and of course there's lots of other frozen meals.
I agree with others to get rid of stuff as you pack. Also, covering everything up. The dust gets everywhere and our crew has been excellent about covering everything up, putting plastic, cardboard, etc. down and vacuuming everyday and it's still dusty! Good Luck!!

I read your story, Belasea! Sadly, our kitties have all passed on, so I don't have to worry about a hiding kitty.

I suspect that my little terrier will be very vocal about the invasion of her space... but we'll confine her upstairs.
