Towel bar fell out of wall.. lower existing or buy longer one?

My towel bar originally was placed off center behind the toilet thanks to my builder. I had him move it under the window above the floor vent. When I changed out my curtain rod a couple weeks ago I managed to pull the one side out. Shouldn't of been leaning on the towel bar! There's no keeping it in there.

My question is, would you move it lower and use the same one or buy a longer towel bar and keep it at the same spot? I'm not sure what size that one is or what other sizes they make. I wouldn't want more than two towels on there.

I'm getting ready to paint in the next couple of days and figured I should take care of this before I start.

Here you can see it half hanging out of the wall.

How would you feel about switching to hooks??

Leave it down until after you paint. Then use those metal butterfly wall anchors. But I would also rather hooks. Here is what the wall anchors look like...

Mimi, that was also one of my biggest fears: Mom falling and us not hearing her! I had a large school-bell beside her bed that, if she needed me, she could ring or shove onto the floor: there's no way to ignore that sound! We also tried an intercom, but she never did get the knack of buzzing us even when she was lucid, so a baby monitor is the way to go. The one thing I'm concerned about are the bed rails. Statistically, our elderly are more severly injured by trying to climb over bed rails when they need to get out of bed than just slipping onto the floor from bed. That's why they're not used in many nursing homes. There are rails that attach to the bed and are only a foot or more wide to give them something to grasp onto when getting into and out of bed, and that may help...Does your Mom have wall-to-wall carpeting in her room? If not, maybe a very large, stable one could be used to cushion a slip out of bed? Also, do you know why she fell? Was she trying to get out, or did she just turn over and fall? Perhaps pillows, or a large body-pillow tucked under her blankets along the edge could help re-direct her turning over? She may not be getting up in the middle of the night yet, but there will come a time, and rails scare me.... Anyway...I'm glad to hear she only broke a nail! Good grief. I hope you find a solution for her...maybe putting her bed against a wall, or positioning a dresser beside her bed? Good luck, I've been there, and I know how frightening it all can be! Thank heavens she's loving her new home and is vitually THRIVING in it! She's so happy and always has something new to tell us about! What a miracle! But what a decision to have had to make! Thanks for the responses. Allison - Interesting observation about the height. My ceilings upstairs are low (dormered cape - 88") so 40" would be less than half the height. Either way, it's a small bathroom so I think there's not enough wall to create that split in half look. Enduring - The chair rail I'm considering would only come out about an inch, so I don't think the towels would touch the wall except while actually hanging them, nor would they drape out. If anything, the chair rail will hold the towels off the wall for those top few inches. But I'll definitely take the depth of the bars into consideration when choosing. Mongoct - Good idea with bumping out if needed. I suppose another option would be a surface mounted cabinet, but I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks again.

Generally speaking, I don't think hardware should be a resale issue unless it's a whole house full of something extremely dated, worn out, or highly stylized or personal. Even then, any buyer who can pick up a screw driver should know that most hardware is easily replaced with their own choice and one of the easiest and fastest ways to make a place their own. I wouldn't worry about it at all unless this is being fixed up specifically for sale. In that case, less might be more (the train rack gives you a towel bar and leave it at that). People can always add hardware of their chosing. Stay with a basic style they can add to (train racks generally are). Would the hooks, if you use them, be in a regular wall? If so, they are easy to replace, especially if you keep a small container of touch-up paint marked for the room it goes with. If you are drilling holes in tile or something, then replacement is more of an issue, but as long as towels can be hung and have enough room that they dry properly, I don't see an issue for most folks. If this is for space considerations only, make sure that hooks large enough to hold and dry towels well don't stick out more than a towel bar. And if they are for your use, get what you want.

We have both hooks and a towel bar in our bathroom. I use the towel bar and my husband uses the hooks. My towel always dries much faster on the bar than my husband's does on a hook, unless he hangs his towel across all three hooks. Even though it's not as cute as hooks, I do think you'll be happier with a bar. "I can't believe that so many people hang up wet towels. 10 minutes or so in a dryer after everyone has showered, and the towels are fresh and dried, and the bathmat isn't a soaked mess." Sounds nice, but in our case, it would be more work and I'm trying to reduce unnecessary resource consumption in our household. Our bathroom is two floors up from the dryer and I don't have that kind of time in the morning, to run towels down, remember to pick them up when they're done and run them back upstairs. We simply hang our towels, and they're dry by the time we get home from work. We don't need them done any faster than that, and I don't have 2 minutes to spare on running towels around when I'm trying to get out of the house by 6:30am. I'd rather sleep the two extra minutes. ;)

Hmm.. that metal anchor is actually what fell out of the wall! lol I can't push it in.

Since you'll see the window/towels from down the hall and it's the first thing you see when you walk in I think I'd rather use a bar. I'll think about the hooks though. Wouldn't be the first time I changed my mind about something. :)

I think that towels hanging on hooks are much more attractive than towels on a bar, unless they are decorative and you have monograms on them. The towels also dry faster when on a hook.

One thing we always do when building a house, is to put supports (scrape wood) between studs in various places - like the bathroom, where we know we will be hanging towel bars, hooks, and large heavy paintings, etc..

Are you guys saying to add the wall hooks there under the window? This isn't a big bathroom and the only wall space really is behind the toilet. I'd rather leave that area for some art.

I guess I should also mention this bathroom doesn't get any shower use right now. It's just DH and I and kids will be a ways off yet.

Actually I even thought about what I would do when we do have kids. I think I'd rather have hooks on the back of the door and the other towels for pretty basically.

I actually really like the idea of monogram towels! I have a thing with monograms right now. Any suggestions where I can get some?

We have a couple of local shops that do monograms on whatever you take to them--nice! I was wondering about installing 2 hooks at, say, 1/3 of the way in from the edges of the window sill.

On the bright side, your current bar location is pretty high. I think you could get away with moving your existing towel bar down a few inches and that would be fine too. It's nice that you have a heater vent just below them. Warmed towels--yum!

In our master bath, I use a bar and DH has his towel on a hook. My towels tend to dry faster, but his are easier to put away. C'est la vie!

Shee, You can get monogrammed towels at Target, through the link below. Don't know if they have the colors you'd want, but they do have them. As for the towel bar, I'd not worry about it until you finish painting. Then decide whether you want to use a towel bar, or hooks. It's doubtful that you could use the same hole where the bracket fell from, if it was already anchored. You'd need to change locations, and preferably find a stud to attach it to, if you're going to use a towel bar.

There should be studs on the sides of the window.

Attach the towel bar brackets to the studs. You can get a towel bar as long as 30". If the distance between the studs is less than 30", you can cut the bar down to fit.
