As you have noted, textiles - in the form of bedspreads, drapes, rugs, pillows, and wall hangings - all serve to warm up a room.

Drapes don't have to be functional to warm up a room - stationary panels will work just fine. But even inexpensive ones are going to cost something, and then you add in the hardware, and up goes the price.

If I were you, I would start with a bedspread and pillowshams. And something to hide the boxsprings - a tailored bedskirt. Then artwork for over the bed. (Actually I would start with bedside lamps!) Then more artwork on the walls. And more lights.

I would start with some accent sheers for the windows....you can keep them open. They would just add some softness. As far as headboard and nightstands....hit craigslist or estate sales. You will be amazed at what you find. Also check to see if Habitat for Humanity has a resale shop in your area. I picked up a real nice horizontal wooden file cabinet, 2 drawers for next to nothing at ours here in Louisville. Or if you are handy at all you can make your own padded headboard ...you see that done on HGTV a lot.

We used to have a nice view out our windows *sigh*. I still wanted to soften them in the DR, though. I just used valances and because there was another one around the corner (not visible in this pic), I framed them with side pieces that cascaded a bit further down.

Valances could also hide the difference in your window height if you wished.

How about starting with some artworks -- check stores like T.J. Maxx, Target etc. Or frame some photos of family, friends, pets, local scenery -- even the house plans!

How about lamps and lighting -- again -- check online sources like Overstock -- and Lamps Plus.

As for a quicker answer to furniture -- try checking your local Craig's List. There are both deals and treasures (and some trash too!)

As for textiles -- I agree that a simple way to finish your bed would be to buy a bedskirt OR a couple of fitted sheets to cover the boxspring etc. add a headboard OR perhaps a wonderful piece of fabric that could be taken down (hang it from a rod with clip rings) and washed.

Try a wood bench at the end of the bed. How about a couple of chairs and a round table between them by the window?

I would start with a large potted plant in that corner with the two windows-something 4 or 5 ft tall set in a big rattan/wicker basket/pot. If there is room in the opposite corner, I'd do another one there as well.

Head to your local thrift store and buy two tables to use as night tables. They don't have to match because your going to paint them the same colour. Go to Home Depot and buy a couple of lamps for the bedside - they have fairly inexpensive ones there. Homesense has super large canvas artwork for about $50 to hang above your bed (don't get anything small, you need something really big).

All great advice above! Especially like parma's suggestion to use valance/blinds to make window heights appear the same.

Not sure if your room is large enough, but building a window seat under that long window would be great for your pets, and maybe even for you.

You didn't mention much about your taste, but if it leans contemporary, you might try hanging an area rug over the bed. You get a lot of impact for relatively small price, and more textural warmth than traditional artwork.

I think a rug would go far in warming up the room. Also a tailored bed skirt, which could match shams or even curtains. I like the view, but at night you might want to have something to close and make the room cozy. Not everything in a home has to be about ease of clean up. It's a home, not a lab. Get a roomba if you hate to vacuum.

Curtains don't have to be all that expensive--I've made decent looking ones out of table cloths.
