Broadloom carpet made into an area rug...

Hello, I am looking for an area rug for our great room and have been looking at natural fiber rugs. I like the look of these because they go well with the style of my house and I want something neutral on the floor. Now, thanks to a suggestion on another post, I am also considering going to my local carpet store and checking out having some broadloom carpet bound into an area rug. The benefit of this is that I could get the perfect size. Ideally I need a 10x11 rug... Does anyone have a picture of a broadloom area rug? Also, do they make broadloom that has the look of a natural fiber rug? Do you think I could get the look I'm going for with broadloom? Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

We used a broadloom rug as area rugs but with a more formal look and as you mentioned we were able to get just the right size this way. We had two different but complimentary broadloom rugs made into area rugs for our adjoining living room and dining room. Since we had refinished the hardwood floors we didn't want to cover them up again and at the time couldn't afford Orientals.

Our decorator helped us with the project. The living room rug is a solid slate blue and we added a subtle floral border with the same blue background. The dining room is the same blue but with an all over tiny floral design and has the same floral border as the living room. We also installed a stair runner in the same shades. We've had lots of compliments and after 25 years they still look great. We did buy a very good quality wool.

We had an area rug made for our bedroom. I wanted a neutral rug, but not wall to wall. We had this bound on all four sides and love it. We have had it for 5 years and still looks like the day we got it.

I have the Champagne. I used to have a White Star, which was also fine. I upgraded because I have severe asthma, and the filtration is better on the Champagne. It also has Direct Connect -- which means I can just take the floor tool off and replace it with a dusting tool or whatever I need - much easier to handle.

I think the real issue is wall-to-wall carpeting itself being incredibly bad taste, dated, and unhygienic. If that wasn't bad enough, it removes a lot of versatility which is why throwing a rug over the top is not a good idea. It screams "yeah I really don't need this tacky carpet here, see I even own an area rug that would look better!". Either own the carpet and have it stand unashamedly or rip out that late 20th century abomination so you can properly decorate.

Someone once posted a neato tip for curling rug corners. Get two of those self-stick vinyl tiles (the heavy ones) at somewhere like Lowes. Cut each one from corner to corner to make two triangles. Flip the rug corner up, peel the backing off the tile and fit it snugly into the corner of the underside of the rug, tightly against the binding or edging. This stiffens the corner and weights it down a bit so it doesn't curl up. For large, stiff rugs, you may need a whole vinyl tile at each corner. Also, if you can, reverse-roll rugs for a few days before laying them out. A big reason to bind the carpeting, besides potential curling and the scratchiness, is to prevent unraveling around the edges which just looks cheap.

Yes here is the picture, In the same color. no eating or drinking , mainly conversational. So we r having four of these sofas. 2 on each of the facing walls. The cream 3 seater that I already have will go on the back wall. (we also considered keeping the cream sofas in the same spot as they r right now, and just putting two of these chocolate sofas on the opposite wall , or one chocolate 3 seater opposite cream 3 seater, and one chocolate 2 seater opposite the cream seater. My husband says it would look fine but I think they would look odd. ) no coffee tables , if I get space for end table I would, v small ones. Like those mini round ones, but really they won’t serve any purpose. since i m filling each facing walls with two 3-seaters, I may get space for only two chairs.

Good idea. Lots of rug/carpet stores have remnants that they will bind for you at a fraction of the cost. Ask about that; they may have your perfect size!

Not sure if I posted before, but this is an example of a broadloom that looks like sisal.

We did this in my sons room and it worked really well - we ended up with a remnant that happened to work great color wise- even with the binding it was less than $100 and has worn like iron. I think a wool sisal blend would be terrific - I think you will have a lot of choices with broadloom.

Did that years ago for our older son's room, and it was a great solution. Not sure about the wear factor, as we were only there about 2 years before we moved, but it was a good solution both for the price and the benefit of essentially having carpeting in the majority of the room without being stuck with installed wall-to-wall.
