Window Covering Question

I have an arched window in my DR that is 8 feet tall (from the top of the arch to the window sill) and almost 6 feet across. It's 2 ft from the floor to the sill. so if I were to use the entire length of these, they would go nearly to the top of the arch. Which might look strange?

With a window like this, How high up would you put the curtains? I found some that are 109 inches, but I COULD shorten them if need be.

Here is a picture (best I could find) showing the window.

Thanks for any suggestions/thoughts, The curtains hung there now are at about 5 feet above the sill.

I would either place a rod near the ceiling and do full length drapes, or - since I see a kitty house - continue with the cafe curtain look you have now. If you plan to pull back the short curtains, then I would go a few inches below the apron (the piece of wood below the sill, which you may or may not have).

I'm not sure the significance of comment regarding the kitty tree? FYI, the kitties do not mess with the drapes in any rooms in the house, they do like to get in the windows, so I usually leave them drawn open, cracked open in the middle or on one end slightly, this keeps them from getting scratched from kitty paws trying to open them up on their own. they do not climb on the curtains, none of them ever have.

There will not be shorter curtains, I"m replacing these with the longer ones.

So my question is should the rod be above the arch so that the whole window is covered or would it look odd to have some part of the window visable?

these curtains are not long enough to go to the ceiling. I'd need to add to them (the ceilings are over 15 feet tall)

I thought I'd mention one more thing. I don't think that this applies as much to wood blinds, but we had dark brown aluminum blinds in one room at our old house and they were a nightmare to dust--always ended up with dust lines if tried to just dust and would have to use a wet cloth slat by slat to make them look nice--very time consuming on big blinds. Lighter colors don't show the dust like dark ones do. We have always used Hunter Douglas blinds, cellular shades and pleated shades and have always been pleased with that brand. We just used pleated shades in the upstairs rooms of our new house, and the fabic on all 15 of the pleated shades were defective, and it was very easy to get Hunter Douglas to replace all 15 of them. Hunter Douglas is probably a little more expensive than the other brands, but I have been very satsified.

BL Fenton - I would love to do that. If the carpenter adds a jamb extension around the perimeter of the entire window, what would I do about the wood dividers between the center section and the two side windows? If you could explain how to do this, or point me to a web-site, it would be the best of both worlds. I would seldom open the two side lights, but the center section would stay open from dawn-to-dusk. Grandma of 3 - That's what I had on the base. The S-curve blind was beautiful. I could leave it closed, but adjust the blades to be open - just slightly open or all the way to fully open. They could slant to the left or right, depending on the sun's angle. I could also draw the blinds open from the center and stack the blades to the left and right, just as a pinch-pleat drape would open. I loved the versatility - and being able to clean the blades with Windex and a soft cloth. Yes; the pups are the reason for no fabric. It would be filthy from their noses and slobbery lips and destroyed in no time. I live "in town" and have to have privacy in the fish bowl of a living room, but we're also at the edge of the out back and have a steady parade of squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, deer, turkeys, feral cats, etc.; and they set the dogs into crazy mode. Palimpsest - I always value your ideas! I "knew" in my heart they should match; I just needed confirmation.

curtains on only one window

thanks for the feedback! A lot of our windows on the main floor or the small Windows like the ones you see in the picture. I feel like it is weird to add floor-length curtains over such small Windows. am I the only one who thinks that? maybe it's not weird at all?

Only if you don’t like looking at a brick wall...are the neighbors able to look inside? It seems to me that you may need the light. How about inside mount Roman shades that are open but provide a bit of color.

You could do it either way. But if I understand your post correctly, the height of the arch is 10 feet from the floor. So you need drapes that are in the 120 inch length range, and probably a bit longer so that the rod can be comfortably higher than the arch.

rjinga, I like it the way it is. My suggestion would be to post a query here - "Post pix of drapes/large window w/ rounded top" so that you can see what other people have done. Personally, I can't imagine curtains that hide the rounded top. I have seen some that were made to fit inside - they are on a rod shaped to fit the rounded area and gathered. I think that it looks odd when you use straight curtains that cover the whole window without following the shape of the window. But that's just me :)

My house is old - 1938 - so I don't have those fancy windows, but I do love the way they look.

After using DH (finally) as a opinion giver, he didn't think the curtains looked right being higher (but not completely covering) the window, so it looks like it will work best to keep them the height they are now and I can either alter these to have them puddle on the floor (cutting 1 1/2 feet or so off of them approximately) or get different drapes.

There is so much light behind this window that I am going to have to get something solid to put behind these, even though they themselves are a heavy material and they are lined. without something behind them they are really washed out, because IRL, they are a gold tone background and the really nice contrasting fabric colors are lost!

Here's what they look like (the valance is temporarily hung on a regular rod, which will be changed to a valance rod that comes out about 2 inches from the wall)
