help! Need wall decor ideas!

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting and i'm looking forward to gertting comments from people like me who are interested in interior decor:)

so my husband and i purchased a 1970's home 6 months ago and completely gutted it and redid everything in the house. I'm in love with it , and although I've gotten started, having a 22 month old and a 5 month old make it hard to get out there and shop for things to fill the spaces....

My problem is that I have so much wall to fill and I don't know if I should do paintings, photos, mirrors, etc.. I have a few ideas of my own but I's like to hear what you all suggest!

There is basically :

1:the powder room ( black walls and retro morror and sconces)

2: the living room with the tufted sofas

3: My entryway with the mirrored desk

4: My bedroom

Other than answering for paint color advice, I think this is one of the hardest questions to answer.

I only had a couple of inherited pieces on my walls when my kids were babies. I went to a lot of garage sales, etc. One piece of art I got is worth some money and I bought it for $3.00. :)

Concentrate in the public areas first. Look online. You also don't have to have paintings. Decorative plates hung, mirrors, other types of "wall art." I've even framed a couple of greeting cards. I'd buy cheap frames from Walmart and spray paint them.

I'm partial to watercolor, drawings and prints, not oils.

But it took me years to collect all my stuff. Don't rush filling up your walls. And never put up anything that you don't love.

If you celebrate Christmas and exchange gifts, tell your family you'd like things to put on the walls, and tell them your decorating style. Be specific.

When DH and I had our first home we had little for the walls at first. A couple of the first framed pieces of 'art' we had were a promo at the grocery store! LOL Along with about another 1/2 million people! Later the frames did come in handy for a craft.

Best advice, take your time, buy only what you like, and don't ask for gifts but perhaps suggest monetary gifts or gift cards so you can choose what you like.

Should you "do paintings, photos, mirrors"? Yes to all of those but there are also other things such as architectural pieces, wall shelves with personal/hobby items, fabric/tapestry hangings, and self-made art which doesn't have to take talent. Almost anything can be framed so check out your creativity for a personal original. For ideas or unique art check out etsy.

By the time we had been married 10 years we had quite a lot of art/wall decor and now 40 years later I have run out of wall space and am in the process of editing so I can buy more!

Georgia, we ended up doing Latte throughout. I love it. They are finishing up the painting today but I'll post pics tomorrow after the chair rail is done. We also did red (SW Bolero) in the art niche and beneath the chair rail in the DR. We left the kitchen color the same since it goes with the Latte and is a bit lighter. I plan to get some very colorful window treatments and window seat cushions and pillows to make the kitchen nook pop more, rather than doing the kitchen in a different color. RG at 50% was pretty light. It was very similar to the Blonde, but with a slightly different tone to it. It also looked lighter than Blonde to me. I hear you about repainting. I'm kicking myself for paying another $200 to get the LR repainted just a week later LOL. But I would rather do that than hate my LR, KWIM? Good luck!

Ah, so you do have another space for lounging/TV watching. If you're pretty much sure you'd rather have a TV here too-I'd be satisfied with a (say) credenza or something to host a smaller size TV, which you can surround with some shelving with books, or maybe art..you can bring in plants-a lot of them..lots of interest since some of them grow like crazy and are virtually indestructible..)) and they always look at home-any style, any room you take, you can't go wrong with introducing plants, Remember Clifford Simak's purple flowers? lol you can paint the walls..you can wallpaper them if you're brave..you can put a mural on-there are some amazing ones. there are many many ways to make this room interesting. also don't forget-you look at it now while it's empty. but when you'll actually live there-you'll have furniture, fabrics, books..now it's a blank slate but it won't stay this way. it will be you and your family plus this room. it will be interesting enough without the feature wall. which you still can decide to do-I continue to think these wood planks are way cool..but they might be too overwhelming..and I would think very carefully about how to incorporate them, and whether it's worth investing in. That's personal of course and you might find that yes, you really want it, TV or no TV. Then I'd introduce more of that wood around..maybe wooden frames on art? maybe woven shades in the window? maybe painting the mantle another color so it'll blend more with the walls? And I'd use this plank wall more heavily then if I decide to put it in..it's a big space, and it might be useful and very very cool to have more on it than just the TV. Whatever you decide-it's exciting. Lots of possibilities here. And yes you're right..you don't need to match the wood finishes. You do need to consider how they will look together..in rare instances mixing just doesn't work. Say red mahogany or similar very expensive woods..)) find it hard to incorporate lol. Passed on amazing nightstands several years ago..the most useful amazing high quality nightstands I ever saw(on Craigslist)) but they just didn't blend in, what can I say.. But I don't think that's your case.

Would you post another photo, please. I am not getting how the trim around fireplace and t v are meeting the tray ceiling. In the meantime: to the right of fireplace a small console and lamp and art of your choice on the wall. Consider light tones with a touch of blue, because I think the ceiling with fan would look beautiful painted blue.

You want to "dress up" and Houzzers are saying "lighten up." I think you can do both. Everyone above has made valid suggestions. In addition to those, install a family friendly magnetic bulletin board somewhere so you can clear off the fridge. A cluttered fridge doesn't look dressy. When that one dies, see if a counter depth one will fit that spot. When you have the budget for it, a lighter countertop would do wonders to make the place brighter, and you could dress it in the latest trendy fashion that you like. Dress up the floor with a larger rug to fill the work area. Ruggable has washable ones at 15% off right now. How about a pretty centerpiece on the table? If that's a bistro height table, then "dressy" would mean a standard table, IMO. Bistro height is pretty casual, not really accessible for elders or toddlers, and just not a look I like.

thank you so much, i've been living with "empty walls for a few months so i must resist the urge to just fill up that space... i don't want to compromise and only put up things that i LOVE:))

I would get some document with shades of the sea or the seaside, and make little starfish, seafood, dolphins, shells, etc, and put it on the walls! If you didn't want to do that, I would recommend going to a art shop, purchasing some of those shells and then put them around the home, where you think it's appropriate.

In my early days, I would buy stretcher frames and cover them with fabric as a way of warming up a room and getting something on the wall. It's very inexpensive and you can buy remnants with colors that reinforce your scheme. It's a way of making a "place holder" until you're ready to put something more special in the spot.

I understand the large walls issue well. We are still filling ours after 6 years.

Your powder room is taking the form of elegant with the dark walls and ornate mirror, sconce, and towel bar.

Is there a type of art that you are drawn to?

How about a couple of shelves over the toilet?
