Question regarding curtain hems
Comments (2)The 4 inch double hem is standard I think on most drapes, it is not good to sew fabric and lining together, you will end up with a fabric that pulls or hangs bunched up, remember each fabric has a different weight, strength, etc. some will stretch while hanging, if you has them sewn together and one stretched more then the other you would have a bulge, experiment, if you have a scrap of fabrics, say the size of a sheet of paper, sew it on all 3 sides, the sew the two together, press them see in bulge. hope this helps Rene...See MoreHow much should I charge for curtain hem?
Comments (8)No way would I commit to being in someone's home and doing that. I would be able to tell a friend that, and I certainly wouldn't agree to be held in a stranger's home. This sounds creepy, frankly, and if you go, make sure someone knows where you are. I would ask the reason it was being done this way...off hand, I can't think of a good reason. This may be a customer who feels the need to tell the seamstress how to do the job. If she knows more than you do, she can do them herself. I had to do this once for a piece of scenery. It was tedious, and there was no position in which I was comfortable. And it had to be re-done. On one seamstress forum I was on, one member routinely made house calls for customers. She did the fittings there, and delivered the goods back to them. Her minimum charge for her service was $100. Charge for your travel time, to go there and come home. If you had an appliance repaired, the repairman will charge from the moment he walks out his shop door to the moment he walks back in. My hourly rate (if i did this, and I wouldn't) for this would be $70 an hour, with a minimum of one hour. My man-friend would be going with me, and I'd tell the customer that....See MoreWhere should hem of kitchen cafe curtain fall?
Comments (25)It is clear that you do not want a traditional cafe curtain because they are mounted inside the window frame and are just a hair above the window sill. A valance will not give you privacy at night. You can replace the glass with one way view glass but it sounds like you really want to use fabric. I suggest a relaxed Roman or a balloon shade hung from just below the ceiling so you can keep it raised to just below the top of the window during the day and lower it at night. There is a risk of getting anything that give you privacy wet if you are washing dished with it closed so consider an indoor/outdoor fabric or treating another fabric to repel water and soil,...See MoreShortening jeans and keeping the original hem
Comments (20)I have read about putting in a new hem and then distressing the new hem. I haven’t tried it, but I’m posting it below if you want to try. Fortunately, I’ve found a brand of jeans that are the correct length on me, Talbot’s Slim Ankle Jeans. From Reddit: You can mimic the wear on the hem of jeans by washing them, then going at the folds that occur with sandpaper or nail files. For more distressing, try a microplane cheese grater. The folds are from the way the denim shrinks, it's a twill so it goes a bit diagonal when the weft shrinks. While I don’t mind the look of a raw hem, I tried to DIY a pair of jeans. I thought it looked like I had cut off a pair of jeans and failed to hem them....See Moretheclose
