opinion on length of vanity light, please

I just posted this in the bathroom forum, then started thinking that maybe you all here might be able to help me, also.

We are getting ready to move and have been trying to do some updating of fixtures. I also want to decorate my drab, boring bathroom and make it look pretty for potential buyers. It is all cream and beige and now has new brushed nickel fixtures. But can't do any decorating until we take care of the light the builder put in 20 years ago.

Hubby and I are going to replace the light over our master bath vanity and will make it brushed nickel to match the faucets and knobs we added. The mirror is 64 inches long and one of those huge ones that the builder just glued to the wall.

Our vanity is big enough to have a double sink, but the builder was too cheap to put in a 2nd one. The current light is a gold bar with those hollywood light bulbs and is 48 inches long.

Hubby chose a light he likes but it comes in 2 different sizes and we aren't sure which size would be best, 45.5 inches or 54.5 inches. The base of the light is oval and about 18 inches wide, and the remainder of the length is taken up by the arms of the lights reaching out.

Someone mentioned to me that it might be best to go with the smaller light because the larger may bring more visual atention to the fact that we only have one sink. Someone else said that won't matter, they will notice no matter what, but the longer lights may be about the same length as the mirror, & as the vanity and that may not look good, then she said... or would it???

oh 2nd question, if you don't mind. Hubby also wants to replace the lights in the other main bath on the 2nd floor and our first floor powder room. He feels that since they originally all were the same that they should match now. Should they? Or can all 3 be different? All 3 are different sizes, but this new pattern does come in the sizes. Thank you.

I would do the larger light, to better light the usable mirror space. It wonÃ¢ÂÂt make one iota of difference as to whether people notice that there is only one sink - that is what they are in the bathroom for. You had better hope that people using the bathroom notice the sink! LOL

As for the second question, just as you would not feel obligated to put the same lamps in every room in the house, that is also true for the bathrooms. Each is a separate space, and each can have a completely different decor. Builders put in the same lights everywhere because it is easy and cheap. Trust me, I know from personal experience! I still have a light bar in our downstairs bath after 22 years in the house. At least the upstairs bath got replaced!

Olychick, I used handles because I thought it'd be easier to grab a handle at the bottom than a knob. Then the small bottom drawer looked funny with a knob. Hadn't thought of bringing the handles up to the entire drawer stack. I think that would work if I use a lighter, more feminine style of handle. Thank you! GreenDesigns, if I were to take the vanity all the way to the corner, I still don't like the hutch against the wall. I could add more drawers, but I have 15" wide ones now, so I can't see the need for another stack. With what I have in that bath now under the sink and on the counter, I will be lucky to use two drawers. I guess I don't have as much stuff as most people. I have two eyeliners, both gray, one mascara, and I wear Chapstick. lol I guess I could go back to the linen closet idea, but he said that would be the most expensive option, and it would probably put us over budget. So I'm hesitant to put in storage that we won't use and the expenses that multiply with it. I could add a few more inches at most to the drawer and hutch, maybe go 18". We plan to get a storage ottoman for the master bedroom for sheets, blankets, and pillows that we sometimes kept in that linen closet. The master bath will get a new vanity in a year or two that has the same long drawer under the double sinks. So towels are covered. Toiletries are covered. Bedroom linens are covered. But I'm hearing that I'm not making best use of storage. Am I making the best use for two old fogeys who have an occasional guest? If anything, I'd like more counter space, which I could get by eliminating the hutch. :( But I will have more than the old vanity. Sink will be 15" undermount. The vanity will be 2" deeper. Blow dryer and toothpaste etc. will find a new home. I have 12" of space in front of the hutch.

Jen K, thank you for the words of encouragement! The pendant is from Lowes. And yes, laughing has been getting us through a lot of this remodel! Hahaha! Lampert Dias Architects, thank you for your expertise. Your help is so appreciated. And especially thank you for the specificity of your answer. I would have been making the DH balance up there indefinitely, lowering and raising the sconces by an inch here and an inch there! :) Chris Smith, good eye! That is a Costco Vanity that we have had in the garage for a year and a half. We saw it, and scooped it up immediately. Hard to believe it has the real marble top, heavy duty wood base, soft close doors, etc, at the price it was! We will be changing out the hardware though, to better coordinate with our vintage style, chrome fixtures we got from Kohler. We tiled up a bit higher all around the entire bathroom, to accommodate the vintage style faucets, so we didn't use the marble backsplash that came with it. I included pics of the base from the front. The drop cloth is already in place to get up there and hang those sconces. I hope that answers your question. :)

Since neither fixture gives the number of lumens, there is no real way to know the brightness of the lights. You can go to the Q & A section and ask, and Wayfair is good about getting that info if it is available. Given that, I would go with the brighter fixture. I know that it says 56 watts per bulb, but the LED fixtures often have 18 watts total for the fixture, 4 or 5 watts for a bulb. At 56 watts, it should be a pretty bright fixture, and both of the reviews mention that it is. I would follow their advice and get an LED compatible dimmer to hook it up to. It is nice to have extra lumens when you need them, and to dim them when you don't. We ended up going with bright tube lights over our med cabs, and since I don't wear make up, it works for us. Normally, though, you try to get side sconces so that the face is well-lit on both sides, without the shadows you can get if the light comes from above. My hubby has no difficulty shaving with our lights, which are quite bright, but I would not want any dimmer ones up there for him to shave with. Mirrors can have holes cut through them for mounting the lights right onto the wall-sized mirror. It looks pretty cool, reflects the lights out into the room, and does provide the great side lighting that helps with shaving and make-up.

if everyone that uses the mirror is approximately the same height, that would make choosing mirrors that showcase your new tile easier. If you have two mirrors the size shown, you could reuse them, hanging them horizontally, with or without frames. If you want the overhead boxes and light gone but do not have enough tile for that part of the wall, you might consider covering the area with paneling into which you can recess new LED light fixtures or against which you can attach your new light fixture -- or both. I agree......go with the longer light. The fixture should fit the mirror & vanity, not the sink.

Doesn't matter if it matches the light fixtures in the other baths. Personally, I like variety!

I.LOVE.THAT.FIXTURE!!! I'm going to order it NOW in the dark bronze to replace my contractor "make-up mirror" 8-bulb light over the 68" glued to the wall frameless mirror. I'm considering hanging two framed decorative mirrors over top of the existing mirror centered on each sink. A very inexpensive re-do to warm up the bathroom.

It depends. Are you DEFINITELY going to sell your house, no matter what the market does? Or are you putting your house on the market to see if it sells? If there is a chance you will remain if your house doesn't sell, then get the larger light. Otherwise, buy the CHEAPEST one that will update the look. And this is a good reminder people, do your easy updates now so you can enjoy them! Why should only the next owner get the benefit?
