Color Choice for the Front Porch

The exterior of this 1920's craftsman bungalow has been painted (90% done) and the front porch had to be resurfaced and new steps added.

The exterior colors are similar to MS Wrought Iron Grey Blue. All the trim will be off white and the planter boxes will be red.

I'm so hoping for some suggestions for the deck surface color cause I'm really stumped!

If it were me I'd serious think about stenciling a stone floor to match those lovely chunky stone columns. Do a base coat of grey you could color match the stone. It would do two things. Help hide the dirt and it would tie the porch together in a nice easy way.

I would think gray to blend with the stone columns. Perhaps the medium tone? I would want it to be rather plain as to not compete with the other strong colors. The paint job looks really wonderful! Such a fantastic house.

Deep, saturated lacquer red comes to mind! When red is dark, its something like a neutral; it'll go with anything.

I would probabaly do classic white or maybe light pink with blue or purple companion plants...but your idea of yellow/apricot roses with blue or purplish companions is nice too! Do you have anything else planted nearby? Will too much of an apricot tone be washed out too? Brick has so many different hues. On some of my brick apricot would blend in just like reds. I agree with you that reds and bright pinks would get lost. I think light pinks could bring contrast though if they were closer to white and has a bluish hue.

What has inspired you to change what is there? Is the current porch poured concrete that is deteriorating? I think we would benefit from a close up picture of the front porch also. Bluestone is more gray than blue, but as with all projects, you need to have a sample of the material to look at next to the existing conditions in order to know if it will work. I am sceptical about the brick because if it doesn't match the brick on your first floor that won't look good.

What about something like this? not too much texture, but just a little color variation to complement the stones

I think grey, too. I wouldnt want to go too dark because the body is dark. Too light is a mess to keep clean.

I also vote for a medium grey, pull the color from your stone. Great house, love the deep body color and red door.

Our neighbors installed the above craftsman door, without the side panels, in their house, and it looks so great. I would also suggest a medium gray paint to tie everything together. Love your house.

A unanimous color choice!
That just made the decision so easy, now hopefully I picked the right grey. Went with BM Cinder AF-705.
I just hope the BM store is able to color match because we're using another deck coating product which they can tint.

I love that Craftsman door but we're trying to hang on to the door because its original to the house.
But I have been sorely tempted on many occasions because some people have that inexplicable desire to jam their face up against the glass to announce their presence and I feel my life getting shortened everytime that happens!

Thank you for appreciating the charm of this old house, the inside and the outside has been a labour of love and sometimes a real test of my patience, thankfully I have this forum to come to when I'm stumped!

I will post pics when its done(with the exception of the stairs because they were just built), hopefully it gets done in the next day or two, all local paint stores have been posting big signs that say 'Exterior Painting season is over!'

Thanks once again for all your comments and suggestions, I greatly appreciate it.

Chiming in a bit late here, but I am so excited to see how it all turns out - the gray will be beautiful. Just wanted to stop in and say you're doing a great job keeping the original feel of the home!

What a great house! The colors you picked are wonderful and agree that a grey will be a good choice. Just curious on what the "before" colors were? Any before pics?
