From the colors on my comuter monitor the russet and rhubarb look the same but I like both of them because they are deeper colors and make the cabinets look better.
Also, they both look like they are quite on the dark brown side to me. The green of the counter top is really a neutral color.

newhome, LA is Laura Ashley. If you do a search on GW you can find some rooms done in LA Gold 3 and 4. She has a nice palette of colors. I can't remember, now, if they sell her paints at Lowe's or Home Depot. It's one of the two, though.

LA 3 is pretty close to SW Restrained Gold.

I actually like the straw color that Mistybear PS'd, although I initially thought that same color as the mat would be too much. Well, I really like bbstx's Svelte Sage, but if they don't want green, they don't want green. Not digging the darker rust and rhubarb shades at all ... they look bruise-like on the walls to me, sorry!

I like the green or even the rusty red colors with that color of cabinet - I feel like the Gold provides no contrast. especially with the hardwood floor being the same color as the cabinets as well.

The greens are very nice. Take a look at BM Georgian Brick. My young daughter has that in her powder room and it is just a beautiful color. It is an autumn type red..
What colors are in the surrounding rooms? Does she have something that is an inspiration in another room with a color that would blend with the cabinets and counters? I believe she should do a deeper color with the cabinets.... A deep tan would be nice as well.

By the way, I used your DEcatur Buff in my living room, kitchen, etc and it looks wonderful

The entire house will need to be painted. My daughter is leaning toward the darker straw colors (gold or brown) for the kitchen, that mistybear11 first posted. I haven't shown her the rest. I think that limogique ideas would be to her liking, too!

I like the green and terracotta (although there is no terracotta on the floor. Those are wood just like the kitchen. The sage is showing baby blue on my monitor, so that's out.

Let me show DD and BF the rest of this thread and I will get back this evening.

DD does not like the greens, or the purples. She likes the golds/tans/browns, and the terracotta/rust. She would like to see a more bronze color if you have it in you, and perhaps something shown of the other side of the room, plus the dining area.

What about a red like BM Crimson? I think the room would read too 'orangey' with rust/terracotta (but I guess that's personal taste).

Other colors that might work - a light olive, a light tan such as SW Softer Tan, a muted light blue/turquoise/teal. I'd avoid a color that's close to the cabinet color, it won't do anything for the cabinets. If she wants something that is a similar color, then choose a shade obviously lighter or darker.

the cabinets in my pic had antiqued brass knobs. Not as trendy as nickle or ORB but they blended with the cabinet colors and were hardly noticeable.

bbstx - I think that the antiqued brass would work well, too. I didn't realize that your breakfast are had a different color. What is it? The room is very pretty.

decor64 - They want to stay away from anything that might suggest Christmas - hence red walls, green counter top. It's a shame that they can't use red, because DD wants to have a red half bath which is around the corner from the kitchen and off the foyer.

Looks like the browner tan or rust/terracotta is the direction to go in the kitchen, unless I can talk them into an olive or color like bbstx kitchen.

They want to use a lighter tan or gold color in the living room, so the kitchen needs to coordinate, but not necessarily be the same color. IMO, they would need to work in the same color family as the ottoman shown in this photo.

As you can see, the entire house was painted the same builders grade, flat yellow green. The kids would like to use one or two main colors for the 3 bedroom/2 bath house, and then add some color in the Master bedroom (which is RIGHT off the kitchen and DD wants a green color,) and a red in the half bath. So, whatever is used in the living room, needs to flow up the stairs, to the hallway, and to the other two bedrooms and bath. They don't want that color to be too dark.

Check out the Laura Ashley collection at Lowes -- and see the "Sand" color with its different hues (from Light #2 to Dark #6) I believe a combination of these tones -- lighter for the main rooms and the darkest one (Sand #6) for the powder room would work well.

I have lightly scanned this thread so pardon me if this was already discussed. I couldn't help but notice in your pic above that the painting on the floor next to the fireplace and over the mantle are already repeating the color of those beautiful floors. Those seem like the perfect place to pull a rich wall color from also.

roguevalley - Good eye, and notice how the ottoman blends with the prints as well. The floor print is now hung on the wall. Looks great! However, they now need a narrow and long console table for the wall.

I have Putman Ivory in my LR & DR and then in the ajoining Kitchen I have Wilmington Tan. Maybe she would like that.

DD showed her sister and a friend the photos, and they all picked the darker straw color. She calls it brown, because the monitor shows it that way. However, she did say she didn't want the kitchen too brown.

The BF was playing golf, so he has not seen the choices.

Looks like BM HC-12 Concord Ivory. I had that color in my previous kitchen. A true yellow!

lyban - Thank you for posting your kitchen. Perhaps it's my monitor or your camera, but the color doesn't seem that much different than the Putnam Ivory. The kids want something a little darker in the brown family.

bbstx, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but is the little dining table an antique or new. If new, can you tell me the name, manufacturer?

NHB: If your DD wants more of a bronze/gold/brown how about BM Livingston Gold? I have it in my LR and it works well with green, red, black, chocolate and orangey brown. Another color I really like but I'm not sure if you're able to get is by Vista Paints and it's mushroom cream. This is in my entry and stairway which you can see from the LR. Good luck and what an exciting time for your DD!! She's off to a great start with her beautiful new home.

I looked at another thread of yours, and the BM Livingston Gold looks just like my BM Decatur Buff, although it could be a tad darker like the next shade down Mystic Gold. I've told DD all along that she should use that color, but she says she sees enough of it at home. LOL I'll just steer her to a color that looks the same. She and BF are looking at the Lowe's paint, because they fit their budget better. Of course, we still need to keep that ottoman in mind. Hmmmmm

NHB I can't wait to see what you decide to do. This is my kitchen after we moved in and I followed my creative sister's advice and painted it a SW yellow (can't come up with the name in my mind).

I have since installed a wallpaper backsplash and painted it black and put a plate rack over the sink, replaced the stove with a smooth surface black. I painted the island cart black after bringing it back in from the back deck where I used it for the summer. I plan to add a tiled top to it. I had hoped to redo the counter tops this winter but I just don't know. I plan to update the fridge next spring as well as put a microwave over the range.

I just don't feel calm and peaceful in my kitchen. I have lots to do but since I had a hyst last Friday it is going to be a tad bit longer before I'm ready!

Your yellow doesn't look quite as green as the kids kitchen. That paprika is a nice color. The black appliances do look better and I love your plate rack. Interesting idea with the wallpaper. I didn't know such a material exist.

No, they have not been back to look at colors. They do like the darker contrast, however.

My daughter took a new job on Monday, and has been very busy. They are leaving town this weekend, and then DD has the "Walk for Cure" back home on Sunday. Hopefully, we will be able to look at more color charts next week.

NHB, I'm not sure what the breakfast room area is but if I did the right pic, it is the same colour as the terra cotta colour that I pulled from the wooden floor in the kitchen. It looks different because of all light coming in from the window. If you look at the bottom left hand corner you can see the right colour.

When I said before, that I used a gold in my last house that had the light cabs, I also had white appliances.

While I'm not adverse to green or terra with those kind of cabinets, I think they make the appliances stick out all the more.

If it's not in their budget to replace them in the near future, I'd have them take a serious look at camaro's before and after photos.

mistybear11 - Right room, but that color isn't. lol They wanted a more brick/brown, or the dark gold that you showed earlier. The terracotta has too much purple in my monitor. However, it's nice seeing the breakfast room in a different color. Thank you!

parma42 - I am not sure I am following you about camaro's before and after. She shows her current kitchen, and then with a black backsplash. The wall color didn't change. What are they suppose to look at?

NHB, that is the problem with monitors. I have mine calibrated as close to real colour as possible. If you could go to colorcharts and pick out the colour you like then maybe I could get a little closer.

The funny thing is, when I look at my own home photos that I posted on GardenWeb, the color looks the same on the monitor as it does in person.

Could you just use the colors from the Thu, Oct 16, 08 at 18:27 post? Straw and 5% darker colors were their favorite.

Sorry, :( The before pic was of her old kitchen in the paprika. I was in a hurry and didn't read it through. If it had the same green counters of her new one, combined with the white appliances, it would have made the things you don't want to pop, pop.

I was just thinking that a warmer gold would hide a multitude of sins and is so easy to decorate around.

I am having a hard time matching the colour in the kitchen. The paint on the walls is stronger in the breakfast picture and the light coming in isn't giving a true colour. I have this problem when I am choosing paint. On one wall it looks great and on another it looks like a totally differnt colour. Here is what I have so far. If you look in the bottom left hand corner the true colour is there but no where else.

Sorry this is the best I can do. The program that I am using is giving me these colours copied from the two pictures of straw and 5% darker.

I think the kids will go with a dark gold or lighter brown.

When I first read your post I thought of using a deeper golden color that mimics the cabinet color. I think it would give a lot of height to the cabinets and integrate the look. The white appliances will still work with the white door and trim that is there.

Once I painted a one-wall cabin kitchen all light blue, including the space above the cabinets, the backsplash and the back door, door trim and all the one-wall in the same color. Other than the countertops, everything on that one wall was painted blue. Before, the kitchen looked squat and off-center. After painting it all out, it looked tall and larger and "of a piece". I really like how it changed that dinky little off-centered toad of a kitchen into a bigger, taller, more planned look.

Your daughter's kitchen is large, so no problem there, but I think it would benefit from the added illusion of height and streamlining by painting the walls in the golden color of the cabinets.

I thought I had already posted this so hopefully it won't show up twice.

Mistybear11, I would love to see my kitchen with the gold paint and replacing the cart with an actual small island with black beardboard, if you have the time?

bananafana - Those were my thoughts in the first post when I was asking about matching the gold placemat. mistybear11 achieved that look in the post, time stamped 18:32. Although she also colored the mat and made it darker looking.lol The color would be similar to bbstx beautiful breakfast room. :)

loribee - My daughters boyfriend just turned 29 and DD will soon be 24. When I think of where my DH and I were at that age, these kids are way behind us.lol They seem to be in no hurry these days. When I was 24/DH 29, we had one child, and one on the way, and we had owned/moved 4 homes/times by then.

Newhomebuilder, that photoshop is great with the gold. I love it. And bbstx's breakfast room is gorgeous. It's one of my favorites. I have a bedroom in that color, my DD's old room, and I love it. It seems to go with every color. I have a lot of pink and orange in that room, which sounds terribly odd, but looks great. It's a 50s poodle room with chenille etc. So fun.

I've worked on my DD and husband's first house for the last 7 years when they bought it right out of school. At first they were clueless, didn't even know how to paint. They've come a long way now. We had a lot of laughs together while busting our buns over that house. Budget was always a big issue so we were "creative". Now they are established in their careers and can actually spend on nice furniture, not just my estate sale bargains. It's been so fun and rewarding.

NHB I was thinking of you this morning and wondered if you had painted this room. My white fridge died yesterday so I had to go buy one. I bought black and now the new stove, fridge and DW are all black. I still have a white range hood but hope to upgrade to an OTR Micro through the holidays.

No, nothing had been done yet. The kids and I have been so busy. They had a Halloween party and everyone loved the house.

I recently collected several more paint samples, and plan to go over to their house one day next week to show the boyfriend. The house is about 30 minutes from me, so just running by there isn't easy. I think they are planning on doing some painting during DD's Christmas break.

DD was saying that DB was having trouble with both the dishwasher and the oven, so they may be upgrading the appliances sooner than planned.
