What details make a new build seem not so generic

I have always been drawn to older houses and we have lived in a few, but my husband is not on board with any more crazy electrical updating, lathe and plaster walls, lead pipes and no closets. Anyway, we are building a home now and are on a budget but would like to give the house some personality so it doesn't look like every other 2013 home.

Are there things that can be done (we are framing now) that would be easier to do now that would make the home seem less like a track home but won't totally break the bank? We have paid for the upgraded trim and window wrappings. My husband is pretty handy and will do some wainscoting. We plan to add built ins on the fireplace wall. I'd love to add a built in corner cabinet in the dining room.
