You could certainly paint the table legs. Spray paint works wonders! I would say one way to tell if the table is too large for the space is if you are always bumping into it when trying to maneuver around the room. It does sound useful from the way your family is using it.

The room is pretty much a blank slate. I need to buy a rug, curtains, lamps, end tables, and paint the walls. I am also open to painting the wall unit a different color. My husband still has to make the shelves and doors for that too. I welcome any suggestions for decorating this room.

Yes, the table is large - but it works well for your family. Once you put down a rug and accessorize the room, I think the scale of the table will not be quite as distracting as it seems to be now. (Someone else will have to advise you about refinishing - I don't know much about that!) Don't worry that your desk chair is black and your sofa is brown. Rooms are more interesting when they have a collected-over-time look instead of everything being matchy-matchy, IMO. I think you're well on your way to a lovely space, and what a nice thing to be able to use furnishings that were given to you! Keep going!

The items you've added to the room will serve your family well. Like Sunny Cottage said, the addition of color and texture will settle it right down. You asked about changing the paint color. I would suggest doing the walls BM smokey taupe, I've included a sample picture of it. This paint is very interesting as it's always warm, yet it can take on a light tan or gray at times. It's one of my favorite shades and it will make the table top and the loveseat just blend right in. It looks stunning against light trim. You'll have a nice cozy nest there.

I like the size table in that room---it's big enough to be useful. Size would only present a problem if the edges are sharp and your kids are continually running into it.

Yes ,the table is too big. However, after reading your post, it makes sense for right now. I would not bother redoing it. Let the kids play, study etc. and don't be concerned about what happens to it.

I disagree about keeping the table in there. It looks as if the desk chair will bump into it frequently, and there isn't a lot of room for moving around if you're using that as an office.

The black chair & light love seat are fine, bring in more black accessories to tie the chair in-the TV will obviously work, but I'd maybe put some accent lights with black shades or a rug with the tan & black. Once you accessorize the whole thing will come together well.
