What do you have for end tables?

Hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll have new hardwood floors and a new couch & chair in a beautiful sage green. I really don't want "end tables" at least not something that I go shop for at a furniture store, but I want something that I can have room for storage or "junk". I'll have the couch, one chair w/ottman and eventually a lazy boy for DH, all three on different walls. The lazy boy really doesn't need a table, but DH might like one for his drink, etc. The chair and table need a table for lighting (I like to read, so I like light). I thought about a piece of furniture beside the chair (between my front door and chair) like linked below, so I'd really only need one or two more "end tables".

It's a lovely piece, but I'm wondering if it's a little tall to serve as an end table...?

Yea, it wouldn't really be a end table, but kinda one. I have a spot between my front door and a window that screams for a piece of furniture. Someplace to house keys, some flowers (sesonal arrangements) and a place to put shoes under... I just thought I could add a lamp and it would serve dual purposes. It's the style I like. Plus all those drawers could use be great storage. And then again, it might now work?!?!?

Thanks to everyone for your input! The picture is right side up if you use an Ipad, which is what I used to take the picture. Thanks to the poster for attempting to correct, but it is upside down on my ipad when you corrected!! :) it is an Apple thing!! This room has been a challenge due to the size and the ottoman that needs to stay! I need a short cocktail table to accommodate the ottoman. A longer cocktail table, which I have tried, conflicts with the ottoman. The more I see th picture, as opposed to being in th room, I am not liking the look. I so wanted this to work, but lost confidence the more I look at the space. I chose the matching end tables because I was trying to achieve a more harmonious, cohesive, symmetrical look due to the size of this small room. With matching lamps, I thought the room would look pulled together. Back to the drawing board. Perhaps a small rattan or wicker cocktail table might work. I definitely need something in the 36" range. Maybe two small cube like pieces might work. The local store had this tea table in front of a sofa and it looked great, but just not loving it in this sunroom with the end tables.

johnmari...good idea to try the chest there, I'll see how it works. The table is the perfect size and height. Many actual nightstands are too wide but this one is 24" and I can use up to about 26" so its actually perfect. Height is good too. nanny2a, I kinda like mismatch, too, if it works together :-) lacombe, that's my new "winter" quilt. I've never had bedding to change with the seasons but I like the idea and I'm enjoying the change. I feel like the room is so hodge podge but I've gotten so much furniture for elsewhere in the house I'm just inclined to go with it, it works for us. Just wanted to be sure you guys don't think the table would stand out like a sore thumb. I think I like the fact it's not leggy, too, I have plenty of legs in that room. So you think 2 would be ok? Matching lamps on them?

Why yes, I does :). I have a black coffee table with a lot of brown in the room. Leather couch/chairs and wooden tables and miscellaneous pieces like the tv shelf. My table is from Thomasville. Here's the advertisement version: I've got a couple of pictures that show it in my room, though not all that well. Here they are: Another angle: I think it all works fine. I will add that the wood accent pieces in the LR tend to the tobacco/darker range. I don't have light wood or leather in there. Hope this helps, Ann

ha ha I didn't notice that! No. It's a normal rectangle. I purchased the sofa table when we first moved in. I wanted to start seedling plants for the flower garden, I was starting. Then a few days ago, like.....two years later...I ran across the end table. I think the pieces are very odd looking. Not particularly well made, no age to it...and just sort of BOHO-hippie. :0) I'm curious about their past.

I have an old treadle sewing machine for one stand and an old school desk for the other. I don't like to use traditional pieces and looked more for things that would work for us!

I have a garden potting table that I bought at Sam's, painted it black. It is slatted wood top with wrought iron frame, cheap as potting soil, which suited my fancy and it adds just that little bit of surprise and brings the gardening indoors. It's my sole piece of black in the room, which every room should have, some black. Actually, have two end tables otherwise, but this one works for a a coupole of chairs across the room from the sofa and the other chairs.

sweets98/patricia43 - do either of you have pictures you could share. You're right on track.... something usuable, but unusal is what I'm going for - but I do need a little store for remotes, pens/paper, stuff you might need when you're sitting in the living room. OR I could use baskets under the tables for store! Just thought about that!

Plus I want something very informal. Our kitchen is going in more of a "formal" direction and I need to tone it down, because even though it looks for formal, we are NOT a formal family. The couch I bought is very informal, large and comfy!

I have a substantial 2 drawer bedside table that I use as an end table. It offers great storage for remotes, TV manuals, coasters etc.

I'm using 2-drawer night stands right now. I really like having drawers by the recliner. Great for the remote, phone, lamp on top and drawers for magazines, catalogs, manicure stuff, tv guide, tissues....the list is endless...LOL! There are lots of nice looking ones these days.

I do not have a picture, but just imagine a wrought iron, fairly substantial, not a weakling with a shelf below and a sehfl on top, gated walls of wrought iron about 3 inches tall around the perimeter (top). I do have baskets and pots on the bottom shelf mimicking a garden potting table but inside there are thingies that are used often like remotes, and some other items not to be so obscured but things the grandchildren would lose if they picked them up and forgot where they put them, like keys for the clocks, lighter for fireplace, candle snuffer, etc. Horrors, a little planter has a faux orchid in it while another boasts some paperwhites. I do use real flowers there when in season.

I took pictures but I'm having trouble with the wireless printer to laptop importing. :(

I have an antique iron pub table with a marble top on DH's end of sofa. This isn't it but it is identical other than the color:

On my end of the sofa, I use an antique wooden grape harvesting basket from Belgium.

I used to have this marble top night table on my end, but have moved it next to a chair when re-doing the great room. It's still in the room, but next to a chair.

I'm loving these ideas ..... thank you so much. I think I need to pick up a couple of "country" decorating magazines, they usually have some good ideas in their "featured" rooms. I love the wooden crate ..... it would be perfect by the recliner or even one end of the sofa if there is room. THANKS again!

I, too, love seeing these other great ideas. I just recently bought the little table linked below. It was just what I needed for a small space in our family room. Granted, this is not heirloom quality, but it serves our needs just fine :-) I bought it online, but I don't think I can link to o*erstock.com's website here. However, the "o" place was the cheapest place, due to their $2.95 shipping, which is even lower right now--just $1--but I think that special ends today or tomorrow.

By the way, thanks for the link you provided; I bookmarked it so I can go back and browse later.

If you get a chance, post a pic of whatever you decide to do!

cattknap: I think your living room photos have just become my inspiration photos for my living room. It's jsut the kind of mis-matched look I am looking for. I love that all the chairs and tables are different and yet come together in a timeless way. I'd love to see more pics.
